I got accepted at Hunter College. Although it is my safety school, it is looking increasingly more appealing since the tuition is inexpensive, and the location is in the heart of manhattan. I was reluctant to even consider going to Hunter because of the massive student population and the incompetent (so I've heard) administration. Anyone out there know anything about Hunter College and pre-med? And what do you think are the advantages of being a premed student in nyc?

I have never heard of either Hunter College or this "NYC" that you speak of.

Do they teach you how to shoot arrows and use a sword? I don't think you will find many deer in NYC.

There's a kid in my class that went to Hunter, he liked it. Advantages of NYC are the sheer number of pre-made and ready to go opportunities. Pretty much any medical or service opportunity that you could hope for is here.

I'd go to Hunter. I had a choice of transfer schools, including Cornell, Columbia, and UPenn, which I immediately crossed off my list because I didn't get the "free" tuition they offer now...that's only available to incoming freshmen. So my choice was between Stony Brook and Hunter (and the 3 or 4 other CUNY schools that are inferior in the sciences). I chose Stony Brook ONLY because I got into the Honors College, which looks good and offers free tuition. I would have gone to Hunter if Macauley took transfer students.

Stony Brook is okay, but I definitely would have been much happier at Hunter. PM me if you have any questions!

I didn't apply to the honors college, so I wouldn't have the same perks and opportunities. The tuition is also swaying my opinions of the school, but I have to remind myself that if I do decide to go to Hunter, I'll be among the massive general student population, which is overwhelming.

That's good to hear. and yes, NYC is limitless which is why I considered it in the first place. 🙂 Thank you for your input, unlike the obnoxious comments made in the beginning of this thread.

Ignore the trolls. I'd definitely go to Hunter. And I'll let you in on a secret that probably isn't a HUGE secret: biochem is actually an easy major there, relatively speaking. Hunter is incredibly well-respected, but for some strange reason, Biochem I & II are easy A courses, at least at for the time being. But there is great research there, and it's incredibly well-respected. My orgo professor (who still teaches at Georgetown) told me to apply for transfer to the Ivies, Hunter, Stony Brook, and Binghamton. Sorry to ruffle feathers...it's his opinion, not mine...but he insisted that that those were the only schools I should consider with my GPA. I got into UPenn, Cornell, Columbia, and Harvard, but I didn't get the awesome free tuition package that is only offered to incoming freshman (though they don't explicitly mention that!) so I had to choose between the rest. Like I said, Hunter would have been my top choice, but I got into the HC at SB, and they pay my tuition and most of my living expenses.

I still wish I chose Hunter. It wouldn't have been *that* expensive in the scheme of things, and the experience there is better. But I only had to spend two years here, and I'm non-trad and focused more on finishing than the college experience. Hunter will definitely offer a better experience!

Several members from my medical school class went to Hunter or another CUNY as did I. You will have to work a little harder in terms of getting a medical school acceptance ( Have a really good MCAT and GPA, plus be on top of your applications as CUNY premed advisors are sometimes overwhelmed and/or not the best). However the inexpensive tuition is great. You can do anything you want with a CUNY degree you just have to be very organized and on top of your game.

A few of the C.U.N.Y. colleges are good science schools; Hunter is one of them.
