Has anybody ever been to NASA and checked out their program?

I have recently acquired a keen interest in microgravity and its effect on mental instability.

According to their website, it's a 4011 applicant to 20 slot ratio.

I was under the impression that basically the only type of people they take are air force pilot types with lots of flight experience in military aircraft...

i guess its possible they would take someone who has no military or flight experience, but given that the competition is so steep, i would guess it would put you at a significant disadvantage compared to all the military types who apply for the astronaut program

Note the difference between being an astonaut and being a mission specialist. If your not flying jets for the military right now youll never be an astonaut. But, NASA sends up at least 2 mission specialists per flight to conduct experiments etc these are just researchers....like phds or MDs or whatever....

This is cool. I've always wanted to experiment with the microbe Deinococcus radiodurans in space. Scientists use it for bioremediation so it must have some awesome means of surviving in difficult environments (super strong polymerases and what not).
