I am a med student in NYC and the other day a friend of mine (EM attending who currently works out of state) emailed me to let me know she'll soon be looking for an academic attending gig in Manhattan. She asked if I had any advice for her about the programs there. However, my knowledge is limited more to the med school & residency levels. Does anyone have any insight about what to expect as an academic EM attending at the various programs in Manhattan?

I searched for a while and didn't see anything specific to this topic. If anyone knows of any relevant posts please direct me to them. Thanks!

That's going to be highly program dependent. I experienced a few of the ED's as a med student living in NYC, but each gig seemed so different depending on the particular program/institution/culture, etc.. maybe someone else on here can offer some insight. Does she want a core faculty track, as in interested in research or more of a clinical faculty position where you basically work shifts and teach some residents? Is she looking for larger program, trauma center, smaller community? There would be so many variables...

I just hope living in NYC is worth it to her. One attending commuted 1.5-2 hrs to work every day and I can't imagine the huge slice in salary along with living expenses to work in NYC. I remember just walking around the upper east or west side one day and seeing this TINY 1 bedroom apartment for sale, something along the lines of $350K.

WHERE? I'm going to hop on that, last I saw the average manhattan apartment was $1.2 million.

Is your friend currently in academics? The market in nyc is small and tight in general.. worse in academics. Does your friend know anyone? Thick CV? What type of info is your friend looking for?

More work in the community in nyc, but yeah, pay is lower in general and cost of living is HIGH.

I'll Take It!!!!!!! 350K for a ONE BEDROOM on the Upper East Side? Forget loan repayment....

As for the cost, you take a pay cut living in a lot of desirable cities (See: Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles....) I'm going to be surviving on a resident salary next year in NYC and don't expect to starve to death (I hope... if i don't post... could somebody come check on me? Ramen is nutritive right??) so it can be done, it just depends on how much you value living in NYC vs. a bigger paycheck in another town.
