I need advice on what I can do now. Foreign graduate student with a md. I ended up getting a residency, but apparently one doctor felt like I couldn't move on. I am still getting credit for PY1, but that is it. The program director will give me an approval letter backing me and I am trying to find a residency to transfer into, but its not looking bright. Any advice would be much appreciated.

There are literally dozens of threads (maybe hundreds) about this issue. You should read them.

There are few things that will may any regular SDN users suspicious of your situation and want more information.

1.
I ended up getting a residency, but apparently one doctor felt like I couldn't move on.
Yeah...1 doctor, even the PD, is not nuking your residency/career. If you're going to persist in believing this fallacy, nobody here (or anywhere) can help you.

2. Your timeline.
It's November, less than 6 months into the year. Either your program is being really proactive or you're off cycle and there's a lot more going on here.

Try to be honest with us if you want honest advice.

Without more details can’t give any advice. With all the fake firings posted around here hard to believe these threads anyway.

I ended up having issues not passing in pediatrics(passed second time) and clinical. However, the main reason for the not being able to continue is due to them feeling I wouldn't be able to lead a first year once I get to my second year. Its not fake and I don't want to give so many details that someone might come here and find out who I am. They did push me back a few months when I didn't pass pediatrics
so...are you off cycle? is this your 17th month as a PGY-1?

if you can't progress to the next level (and if they have given you 5 months to progress, they have been pretty generous to get you to the point), then what do you expect to happen? I seriously doubt that its about just 1 person not thinking you are unable to progress...this would have gone to your RPEC and the decision to let you go due to the lack of progression would have m/l been a committee one.

If you have the support of your PD, then try to find another spot somewhere, but you probably need to sit down and do some significant introspection to see if this truly is the path for you.

Medical knowledge alone can be taught, professionalism/addiction issues can be addressed, but if you can't take medical knowledge and integrate it with clinical actions to practice medicine (or guide others on your team), then clinical medicine may not be for you.

Yes I am off cycle. I've been on pgy1 at 18 months. They were suppose to give me three months to reevulate but they didn't. They decided beforehand to not let me continue. They didn't give me 5 months . It was a remedial and they claim to give me 3 months. But they didn't give me that much time. Also I am looking for advice here. If you are just here to back the program and say well it's your own fault. How is that helpful? I am very much interested in being a doctor. I made it this far. Yes the pd will let me search for a vacant spot, but that is a hard thing to get.

maybe i'm not doing the math right, but 18- 12( the typical pgy year) = 6...you have had 6 more months of being a pgy 1 than the typical pgy 1...so what exactly have you and your program been doing for the 6 extra months? Did they give you a remediation plan that spelled out what you need to accomplish and in what time frame to be able to be promoted to a PGY 2? Did you DO those things? Were there thing you were supposed to stop doing and continued to do them?

and if you don't take ownership of what got you to this place, then the problems will never be fixed...plus no PD is going to want to hear that it was someone else fault that you didn't succeed or that it was the place and not you, etc...you are damaged goods...you are going to have to convince a PD that the mistakes that got you fired from your 1st position are not going to happen again.

and i am giving advice...its just not advice you want to hear...if you want us to say there, there, BAD PROGRAM, BAD PROGRAM, and its not your fault, you have come to the wrong place.

that's great that you want to be a doctor, but just because you want it doesn't mean its gonna happen...I mean I could want to be runway model, but my 5 foot 4 inch self is a *bit* too short (my non anorexic BMI doesn't help either).

You need to slow down, take a deep breath, and type detailed, comprehensible sentences about exactly what happened. We can't, as a forum, give you advice, when we don't know what the issue was. The issue was not that you were on remediation or probation, but rather, WHY you were on those things.

I get that you don't want to post too much information, but if you want advice here, you have to give us something beyond "they told me i was resident but one doctor said no and they told me I could remedial but they had already made mind up what can I do" because we can't tell you what your options are without knowing the reason you're in this situation.

1) What were you told you were doing wrong (or not well enough)? What was the issue that led you to being off-cycle in the first place?
2) Did you meet with your program director to discuss your deficiencies and a remediation plan? Were you told you were on probation?
3) Given that you were kept on as a PGY-1 for an extended period of time, I assume it was explained to you as to why?
4) Did you work on or try to fix whatever your deficiency was?
