For those in residency or practicing OMFS (or any other specialty where you have to stand for an extended amount of time), how do you get used to standing all day? Anything to make it less painful? Do you get used to it after some time? Anything you wish you knew earlier?

What shoes are you wearing? How long are your cases?
You won't hear anyone in the OR complaining about their feet hurting from standing too long.
The right shoes are important. Some people love Dansko's. I personally wear Ultraboosts, and building quite a collection.
But you do get used to it after some time.

Take it from a sneakerhead, UBs lose their comfort and actually bercome uncomfortable when the boost is compressed from wearing all day.

Most OMFS at my predoc wore Hokas

The OMFS docs I work with highly recommend compression socks.

Oofos clogs. Great for long cases, easy to clean. Can get a little hot. Switched to them from dansko about 5 years ago.

Merrell Jungle Mocs. I always stand, even when doing root canals, surgeries, fills, etc. You should busy to the point where you don't even think about your feet all day. The shoes are great for when you have to run from room to room.

You simply get used to it. Wear comfortable shoes, and practice good posture while you operate. And truthfully, I am much more comfortable when I’m the primary operator. For some unknown reason, my legs get much more tired when I’m first assist. Not really sure why this is. I’m curious if anybody else feels the same way

Thank you all for the suggestions! I will be sure to try these all out!

The evolution of one's footwear over time is fun to see.

As one gets older, and they have more "mileage" on their bodies, and the experience that comes with dealing with the affects that mileage puts on our bodies, at some point the light goes off in one's head and you realize that the function and comfort is more important than the style.

Hoka's are great for sure (I'm on my 3rd pair currently) after having been a New Balance 990 guy (yup those BORING gray with white trim one's you see "old guys" (as my teenage kids say) wearing often. And it's not just for cushioning reasons I wear them, it's also the arch support that they provide as well.

For most of us, regardless of the type of footwear you wear whether at work or at play, the sooner you spend more time wearing properly fitting footwear with GOOD support, the happier you and your feet will be in the decades to come
