Rising intern here, fretting a bit about being one of a small handful of newbies at my program. In my class of 8, two are home-grown grads, one is a prelim who is now a categorical, and I'm pretty sure at least one did an away rotation there. Then there's the rest of us, without a clue where the bathroom even is. I worry a bit about being slow to catch onto thing when I'm trying to take in so much at once, and being labeled as one of the dumb ones off the bat because I won't know where stuff is or what the system is. I know it should be understandable, but looking befuddled obviously colors others' opinion of you. Also would love to hear tips on how to get faster at catching onto procedures. My school program was very hands-off/micromanaging, and my residency program is known for their volume, acuity and autonomy. That's why I picked it, but in short...I'm scared!

I'd tag onto one of the people who know the hospital well and ask them to show you around during orientation or something. Having a working knowledge of how to get from point A to point B in the hospital, especially if it's not straight-forward, will help. It's not going to break you not to know but it'll at least help orient you.

Also, if the EMR is the same, you could ask one of them for a quick set of templates/tips/etc. You would eventually figure this all out on your own, but hopefully they're collegial in helping you get up to speed with the non-doctor portions of being an intern (how to navigate the hospital, navigate the EMR, etc.)
