what happens if you score below the mean for step 1? does that mean i am doomed?

No!!!! You and the 40 or so (depending on how much below the mean) percent of people who did worse than you did will all land a residency, will all become doctors, and above all, will all be what you set out to be two years ago -- doctors!

Actually Alex with a normal distribution 50% of people are below the mean. Thats just an FYI. To to OP you are only doomed if you were aiming for Derm ENT etc. most fields take people who are at or near the mean.

I was assuming the OP scored BELOW the mean not on it. Had he/she scored on the mean then 50% would be below. But being that the OP calimed to be below the mean I just took an arbitrary number of 40th percentile and thats why I clarified it with the "depending how much below the mean statement"....Sorry for the confusion..hope that clears it up 🙂

This is a GOOD score! Congratuations!!! It might not land you at Hopkins in Derm, but I can bet that you'll find a good spot in most specialties somewhere.
