I am weighing out my class options for this fall and I was considering taking either microbiology or genetics in addition to my other coursework. I am curious to know what other SDNers think is more beneficial based on 1) how either course looks on the dental school application and 2) the relevance or support that either course has in preparing one for the DAT (which I plan to take this june).

I am sure there are benefits of both courses...but utimately I am wondering what SDNers think is more enriching for a pre-dent...

Both will look good on an application, so if you have time to take the other one before you gradaute, I would do so. As far as preparing for the DAT, I would take genetics. There will be a couple questions on test crosses and the like on the DAT.

Actually the micro class I am taking now looks like it is going to review some of the bio info that was on the DAT. As for genetics on the DAT you don't need anything beyond BIO 1.

thanks for the advice guys...i just learned that genetics is still available and micro is not, so it looks like i am leaning towards that class (instead my normal gut course)

Micro is useful and you will have to take it again in D-School, Genetics is a cool class and very useful but not quite as much.

I took micro because I thought it would look good on my app. I had no idea how important the subject is. Its not just learning about pond scum. I havent taken genetics, though I would like to. I think they only ask 2 or 3 questions on the DAT about genetics, but it would be useful in the long run.
