Hey guys, I'm a current medical student interested in eventually doing translational research in the stem cell field...secondary to actual clinical practice. My school offers MD students the option to take an extra year after 3rd year to earn a MS in clinical research (MSCR). It would cost extra, I'm sure.

Is there any benefit to getting a degree like this? Would this help at all with what I want to do? Or should I just try and do research as a student and see what options I have after residency? (we have ~6 months dedicated to research in my curriculum already)

It's also very possible that my interests will change, but I'd need to decide about this relatively soon (like next 4 months or so).

Thanks for your help!

Having a year to build your CV may help if you're planning on a speciality that looks for research among applicants. If not, I would get the MSCR during residency / fellowship - that way, somebody else will pay for it!
