Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone knows about what percentage of interviewees end up getting accepted into Berkeley? I've heard that they usually interview about 70-80 students, but that there are already about 30 or so students who have been accepted into the school before the interview day. Also, how important is the interview in their final decision? Can somebody please clarify. Thanks!

What do you mean already accepted before the interview day? 😕

I've never heard that students are accepted before interview day...

the pdf file on the opted website should have this information

last year there were 273 applicants and approximately half were interviewed. They try to shoot for 120 and accept 60 although they have increased it over the past couple of years. There is no longer early acceptance. Everyone gets interviewed on interview day so everyone has an equal chance.

hope that helps. 🙂

Out of curiosity, how many people does Berkeley typically waitlist?

I don't recall any early acceptances within the last several years at Berkeley. As far as I know, UCBSO requires all applicants to come to interview day and interview, regardless of how awesome your stats are. Just to make sure you're at least sane, competent, and somewhat sociable in person.

During my interview day couple years back, they said all interviewees had an equal chance of getting accepted since anyone offered an interview has good enough stats (gpa/OAT/experience) to attend UCBSO. Then it's all a matter of your interview, paper (written that day), and other stand-out qualities noticed during interview day to determine whether they want you. Typically there's about 200-300 applicants and about 120-150 interviewees. They accept about 65-75 students and waitlist 5-15 students. The amount of acceptances and waitlisted students varies by year.

I'm currently a 1st year Berkeley, and last year they interviewed a little over 120 of us. They got back to us with results within 2.5 weeks after the interview. Last year, there was no waitlist because so many people accepted their invitation to join Berkeley.

Wait so you're saying that everyone who makes the interview round has an equal shot of getting in regardless of GPA, OAT scores, etc? Also, is there any recent interview feedback from people who interviewed last year or the year before?

In the past they used to do early acceptance for those who showed outstanding scores. But now that the admissions committee has re-evaluated, they decided to interview everyone in person or sometimes over the phone (rare). Its best to interview in person.

The interview involves faculty and student member of the admissions committee. As for any interview always be honest and be able to explain all details of your application. Especially gaps in your education or motivation for optometry.

Yes, I believe their interviewers do not look at any of the stats after the interview's been granted

the interviewers dont get a look at your stats, but they ultimately do not have a say in whether you get in or not, the admissions committee does.

so does the admissions committee put everything into consideration when making the final decision? including, OATs, GPA, PS, LORs, extracurriculars, opt experience, interview, writing sample, and now the group activity?
