best doctors in the nation

if there was a list, you'd most likely find doctors with a lot of money who have paid people to put their name on that list.

having said that, all i know is of the list of the best doctors in NY, which appears once a year in New York magazine. i'm sure there are plenty of doctors who have pulled some strings to make the list, but i know for a fact that there are also plenty who haven't. it usually comes out in the early spring... i think.

And I've no doubt that a list based on prestige, research & reputation would be far different from one based on patient nominations & testimonials.

So it really depends what you mean by 'best'.

And 'best' may not be best for you. There's a lot to be said for the doctor/patient relationship - I know people who have seen doctors and had FABULOUS outcomes/relationships; I've seen those very same doctors and felt they didn't listen to me at all (and subsequently never went back). 'Best' may also very from area to area... for example I never heard of Steadman-Hawkins when I was in Pennsylvania, but everyone here in the midwest absolutely swears by them, patients and peers alike.

When my son was sick I used Castle Connolly a fee service that lists doctors as they are rated by their system which is not a fee based sytem. Caslteconnolly.com has a better description. I was up against a wall and it helped identify a physician in the field we needed. You can take it for what it is worth but it gave me a framework to search my area of the country.

i think there is an annual publication "America's Top Doctors" which list doctors by specialty and location. i believe the physicians listed are voted as top doctors by their peers.
