I feel really stuck and would appreciate advice from anyone. I'm currently on 2 MD waitlists and am waiting for a post-interview decision from a third MD school (although I'm expecting it to be an R or WL). These were my only 3 interviews and I applied to 20 schools. My pre-med advisor doesn't know why I didn't get in, so I really don't know how I should spend a gap year to make myself look like a more appealing applicant. The same advisor also told me not to apply to DO schools and discouraged me from going into an early assurance program that my university has with a nearby MD school, so I'm really frustrated about this cycle knowing that I probably would have been successful with one of those options. I graduated in December 2020 and I'm currently in what was only meant to be a gap semester. 511 MCAT, 4.0 GPA, and over 1000 clinical hours in a variety of fields (EMT, critical care patient care tech, urgent care medical assistant, shadowing in a variety of specialties). ~2 years of biology research at my undergrad university. ~3 years of tutoring in a variety of age groups and subjects. My personal statement was reviewed by several people and all said it was strong. I'm looking to reapply now and I'm not interested in taking any more time off before graduating. I know that my MCAT could be much better, but my study time and actual test date were strongly affected by COVID and I don't have time to retake it now. My pre-med advisor told me not to study for a retake months ago, saying they were sure I would get in somewhere. I applied to 20 schools this cycle and don't want to change my school list much except removing schools I know I have no chance at and removing DO schools because being somewhat close to family is important to me.

I've been looking into lab tech jobs, but is that the right way to go? Should I go back to the hospital setting? Or should I go for something completely unrelated to try to make myself look more unique? I have a lot of experience with music and theater, and I thought that would make me look at least a little bit different, but that didn't seem to be the case. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!
