Hello!

I am a vet from Indonesia, I intend to pursue master degree (preferably non thesis) in USA in veterinary clinical science, with emphasis on dermatology.

Could anyone give me some recommendation on great campuses to study this? I really wish to study the clinical portion rather than doing research, though.

Always wanted to do a dermatology residency actually, but I realize it is nearly impossible for foreign graduate like me without having internship and prior experience in the US 🙁

So I wish to take master degree and hope to get a good LoRs for applying to VIRMP so that I have slightly better chances.

Any suggestions will be really appreciated! Thanks a lot!

I'm very interested to see what others say but as far as I know there aren't any Veterinary Masters programs in the US. I believe those programs occur abroad where the Veterinary degree is a Bachelor's (as opposed to being a professional degree in the US).

In the US, clinical master's degrees in veterinary medicine are often included in residencies - i.e. if you are doing a residency in surgery, you will be completing a concurrent non-thesis masters as well, usually in clinical medicine. I'm not sure if there are standalone programs.

I don't believe there are purely clinical research Master's degrees outside of those people acquire in residencies, but I could be wrong - I'm just not aware of them.

Most standalone Master's degree programs in veterinary sciences are much more benchtop research heavy with maybe some clinical application/collaboration. You might very lucky and find one that is very clinic-heavy, but at it's core it will likely be research oriented.

I would start by looking at vet schools that have large dermatology residency programs - if that si in place, there might be more opportunities for research with a clinical bent because there would be more dermatologists to actually collaborate with.

I think we have a girl doing a (veterinary?) biomedical sciences masters degree as a stand alone. she is from somewhere overseas (i think she said india) and was doing her masters in order to gain more experience here with the hopes of later applying for a residency. idk anything more than that though, and dont really have a way of finding out more info. i suspect this does happen at other universities though, because i think they had someone at NCSU doing that too. the other popular thing is to do research fellowships to gain more exposure, but there may or may not be a clinical side to that, and if there isnt, then you need to be working with people whose names will carry weight.

Thanks for all inputs! I really appreciate.

Dreadfully sorry for terribly late reply. Getting busy lately.

I just wish I match to an internship next year so that I dont have to do master degree 🙁

I was wondering about LoRs for VIRMP, wish you could give me another inputs.

will I get a consideration for internship, if I get good LoRs from someone who is not well known in US? (I mean my lecturers from the clinical faculty in Indonesia, which I am really sure that no one in US will even know them)

You want people with specialty certs from wherever that have excellent things to say about you. Its very off putting when even one letter has either mediocre or poor things to say.

Thanks jmo!

It is truly a shame that in Indonesia, no one has board certification in any specialty. This condition makes it more difficult for me to get a good LoRs, in term of the referee's qualifications.

As far as I know, there is only one vet from Indonesia who already possess a board certification, and she is a certified specialist in clinical pathology (DACVP).

Do you think that having no LoR from a board certified faculty will hurt my VIRMP application? Desperately need some opinions, and some solutions if applicable 🙁

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure to what degree it may hurt you. I am not in a program able to consider any foreign vets (we also don't have a derm program) so I don't know to what degree that would hurt you. You may want to contact programs that are able to accept foreign vets and ask what they look for in competitive applicants and how you can make yourself competitive.
