There are now 40 gyn oncology programs in the country that take 3-4 years to finish after a 4 year residency in OB/GYN. The evaluation of "best" program is always limited to some subjective interpretation. I do strongly believe that a program that takes the best care of patients is truly the best.
That said MD Anderson, Sloan Kettering, Brown, UNC, and UVA are very strong programs as well as UAB, Miami, and Hopkins.

Yes. I agree that it's subjective... sorry for the controversial topic 🙂 Was posting for a second-year friend of mine interested in Gyn Onc.

Those spots are so hard to get, any one of them you could snag would be "good". I think this last year it was close to 200 applying for 35 spots.

I agree. And so, the moral of the story is: Do not go into Ob/Gyn just as a stepping stone for Gyn Onc. If you do not like General Ob/Gyn, you will not shine during residency, and as a result, will not get a gyn onc spot.

Go into Ob/Gyn if you see yourself happy practicing general Ob/Gyn for the rest of your life.

In General, fellowships are tough to get in Any specialty - too few spots compared to the number of residency graduates. If you enter ANY speciality JUST for the fellowship, you might end up being miserable for the rest of your life.

this brings up a good question...how much gyn/onc does a typical ob/gyn deal with? here in prague, i am in an academic center, and it seems the gyn/onc guys do all of the oncology. but, i have a feeling that living in a smaller town, a lot of the gyn/onc would stay with the general folks...

what is the standard in the US? what are the guidelines for referral?
