Hello Everyone,

I was just wondering what would be the best major to get into med school? Should you just take sciences, or take something else and then take your reqs? Thanks!

Best one is Home Economics.

It depends however on how you define "best"

In terms of acceptance, I'd suggest you look at acceptance rates broken down by major. You'll see the major basically does not matter.

G major is my personal favorite.

doesn't matter as long as it allows you to get 3.5gpa or better and prepares you for the MCAT

i chose physiology, just because i thought it'd be useful during med school. But any major is okay, as long as you take the classes your med school wants you to.

Okay, I take offence to this statement. I'm sure most of the other females on this site would too, since we all have to take organic chem! 😉 Of course I'm not really that offended, but "hot" people can be found anywhere, and so can the not so hot ones, so I wouldn't base my major based on the "eye candy" if you know what I mean.

If I had my time back I would have majored in an art, probably History (because I have an interest in it) and I would have taken my premed courses one or two at a time through out my degree. Of course I had to be overally ambitious and take all of the prereqs my first two semesters (except ochem, which I attempted, unsuccessfully the next year) You'll have a much better chance of keeping your grades up if you balance out your schedule. Doing 4 or 5 lab courses a semester is crazy. It's doable of course, but you'll be over working yourself. YOu'll have to work enough when your in medschool. Take the time in your undergrad to do the courses you really want to do. Be well-rounded. Learn about the world. It's not all science!

Good luck to you!!!

no whiny premeds (OMG I GOT A 94% IM GOING TO GET AN A- OMG OMG OMG

No kidding! Sometimes I think one of the worst things about being a pre-med is......other pre-meds (this, of course, excludes the more enlightened SDN crowd😀 )!

Definately, if you like something other than bio/chem/physics, you should go for that. Nothing like taking "19th Century British Poetry" while the others sweat through Pchem II! Of course, that's assuming you like poetry...

Jeebus. The best major is anthropology. If I were doing this all over again, I'd take my prereqs, and then spend most of my time doing anthropology.

Interesting material, easy grades (essays, few tests), lots of time to slack, no whiny premeds (OMG I GOT A 94% IM GOING TO GET AN A- OMG OMG OMG!!), and most importantly, hot girls. Notice that when it comes to things like orgo, hot girls stay away in droves.

And you would stand out in this sea of biology and biochemistry applicants, and probably sound smarter and more well-rounded during interviews.

But what if one majors in anthropology and then doesn't get into medschool, what kind of careers would be available?

ANTHROPOLOGY HAS THE HOT GIRLS?!! WTF??!!

English Majors and Psych has the hot girls! Good lord..

art history has the hottest girls

hot girls may flock to cultural anthropology, but they are few and far between in physical anthro.

DO NOT pick a major with hot chicks. Although they might be great to look at, you'll have to listen to them in all those discussion sections. It's much better to major in Engineering with all guys and then pick off the hot chicks outside of class. The psych/soc/comm trifecta definitely has the most attractive women.

Let me just say this though : BEWARE OF AMBITIOUS WOMEN!

Lion cubs might be cute, but they grow big vicious teeth!

Be careful! While you do see some hot chicks in soc/psych/com majors; you also get A LOT of the left wing, hacky sack playing, Birkenstock wearing, unshaven, ultra-fem whack jobs. From what I see here in So. Cal. you get hot chicks in accounting/business/nursing. Best bet is to take a major you can do well in and enjoy. If you major in concrete pouring and love it you'll shine in interviews. It looks bad when you say I took XYZ science major because it had a lot of the same classes needed for med school.

"Be good, or be good at it!"

Of that 70%, how many would you mind looking at on purpose?

I am doing a double major in Biology amd Molecular Biology. Is this a good idea? Will it help my application? (I am a "B" student)

Double majoring only "helps" you if they are different subjects, like math and philosophy. Biology and Molecular Biology are so similar (and in fact at many schools the latter is considered a concentration/subspecialization in the former) that it wont do you any good. If you are only doing the double to improve your chances of getting in, its not worth it, especially if its hurting your GPA. If youre interested in both and want to major in both due to that interest, then go for it, otherwise, I dont think its worth it.

Just my 0.02.
