Just wondering if anybody has had experience teaching for or knows which test prep company is best to teach for after taking the MCAT itself (pay, hours, etc.).

I've heard you need to be more qualified to teach for Princeton Review but they don't pay as well as Kaplan (where you can be less qualified)

Princeton Review you specialize in only one subject. You have to take a test in that subject to qualify. They pay you $20/hr + $8.95/hr prep time that can't exceed the amount of hours you teach

Kaplan you need to know all the sections. You have to attend an online training and give a sample lecture on a test question before you're accepted. They pay you the same as Princeton I think, but I'm not too sure about this.

ExamKrackers you teach two/three subjects, depending on what day (Physics + Chemistry, or Biology, Organic Chemistry, + Verbal). They pay you $20/hr but don't pay for prep time. Throughout the class, the students will evaluate their instructors. Anything above a 5 out of 10 would grant you an extra $1/hour bonus.

EDIT: This is in San Diego by the way.

$20 an hour seems pretty cheap when you consider they are charging a few grand for the course!!

I get paid more for doing SAT tutoring!! I kinda want to do MCAT tutoring eventually and was thinking Kaplan since it seems like their training is the best.

Will probably look into ExamKrackers and/or Princeton Review also though since I'd rather only do Bio/Orgo/Gen Chem.. I hate physics!

Princeton has the most potential to earn if you want to do it seriously. Kaplan on Long Island and DC has been really flexible for me. I can work pretty much as much as I want to, everything between 40 hour weeks and just an a occasional tutoring student.

I have been on faculty with Kaplan for 3 years. The scheduling is very flexible and you are eligible for a $3/hr raise twice a year. It's based on the number of classes you teach, tutor, success, and student reviews. We get paid for prep and training time, as well as for grading essays for practice tests. I have had a very positive experience working for Kaplan and would keep teaching if med school wasn't in the way.

It depends on the region. Where I taught (Baltimore, which I hear is similar to other places), TPR is by far a better place to work than Kaplan. Both had equal requirements (If you have to be asking this question, you're probably not looking to teach MCAT anyway), but the pay at TPR was significantly higher. My starting was $25/hr at TPR plus the $8/hr prep time (equal to the number of hours your class is). So, a typical 2.5 hour class turns out to be around $80, which was much higher than the Kaplan rate in my area.

What are the requirements to get these MCAT teaching jobs?

At Kaplan you have to score at least a 33 (11-11-11) to apply for the job.

+1, also a Kaplan vet but I plan to keep up minimally one class in school. Correct for the starting pay being comparable but the raises make it a niceeee paycheck if you stick around .

Anyone have experience working for one of these companies during Senior year in undergrad?? Would want to get my feet wet before I consider doing it during medical school..

But since I'll hopefully have some interviews to attend, was that ever a problem?

Which company is best to do with an otherwise full academic scehdule (UG or MD?)

Yes. To #1

Yes to #2, you can't just bounce on a class when an interview comes up but you can look at the schedule before accepting the assignment

#3- no one can really answer that as I'm thinking most of us have just taught for one company or another

Well, what company did you work for and how were your experiences balancing the regular academics, etc.?

Really want to do this since it's up my alley and I think I will have the MCAT scores to do it.. so want to start looking into it and maybe line up a gig for this upcoming year.

i have started up my on test prep company, private tutoring for mcat starts at $80.00/hr

how has that worked out?

I've done the same for SAT and have been able to charge much more than I would make working for one of these companies.. I figured it's harder to break into the MCAT field because there's less people taking the MCAT and they're more likely to go with the big names..

I've thought about doing this but then I can't teach the classes, which is wicked easy, guaranteed money.

At this point I could not only teach my lessons hungover, but possibly while drunk (I do not do this however!). You see the same lesson a number of times and it's just easy

What do you mean? You get to choose which lessons to teach?

I thought it was either you get the entire class and teach every lesson or teach a specific subject.

Sounds like you go online and grab whatever lessons there are that are open.. that correct?

No you look at the class schedule, either choose to pick up the class or not to.

Right, so the class is scheduled to meet every Monday (or whatever) and you choose to pick up the class.. so you therefore are teaching every subject every Monday?

I don't really see how that would be better money than doing private tutoring but I guess its due to the ease of getting the class itself (as opposed to hunting down those willing to trust someone who isn't part of a big name company).

I'll wait until my scores come back and then probably apply to all 3 and see where it goes.

Good idea.

how long did it take after you submitted the online application before someone contacted you? It's been about 2 weeks, and I haven't heard anything.

I'm also curious about this. Anyone have any experience with this?

I was contacted by EK regional director about 1 month after I submitted my resume.
