you will find that there is no 1 all encompassing textbook that provides you with everything...you will acquire a library over your years of training. Having said that, the 3 volume Peterson text is quite good and a good place to start.

cheers

3 volume Fonseca is fairly comprehensive( good chapters or orthognathics, Maxillofacial infections, trauma... kinda weak on cleft)... Peterson's is now 3 volume? I have (well i thought I had the newest) the 2 volume and it came with a CD so it's portable. You can take it with you and reference it when you want. You'll want a good anatomy book (netter) and something along the lines of Ellis and Zides Surgical Approaches (basics of bicoronal, retromandibular, etc). For drugs when you're on rounds you can reference one of those pharmacopiea handbooks. You'll also want a good Internal Medicine pocketbook for patient care.

Unfortunately there's no magic bullet... the one reference that provides it all. Buying a membership to Oral Surgery Clinics of NA is worth the annual price as it supplements Fonseca or Petersons nicely.

Good Luck! Also If you want a book on pitfalls from humble and experienced leaders in our field who've made all the mistakes, get Complications by Miloro.

I think you're correct...Peterson is 2 vol...my mistake. I bought the 7 vol fonseca as a resident, almost 1000$....some sections/topics were extremely good, others not so much.

Start with the "Secrets in OMS." That book gives you a good quick reference with suggested further reading at the end of every chapter.
Now, if you are an extern looking for a source to counter the pimpage, no such thing exists!
Knowledge is cumulative and wikipedia is not often the best quick reference guide.
