I'm talking about pediatric boards, not step one or step two. Thanks!

There was a good thread on this topic earlier this year. You can find it here:

Basically, I found "laughing your way to passing the pediatric boards to be a pretty good book." But you may find differing opinions on this.

Regards,
Nardo

i have the "laughing your way" book. it's heavy on the acronyms (and honestly isn't that funny), but overall isn't bad. that plus a lot of PREP questions and you should be OK.

Do you think the Laughing Your Way to Passing the Pediatric boards is the best Pediatric board review title that is out there? If so, what do you think of their package where you get all of their questions and answers books? Are those good as well?

Laughing is pretty good. Agree that it is heavy on the acronyms. I did purchase the series with the picture book and questions. I actually took the picture book and then found the same pictures in Zitelli and tagged them (not sure if that was all that helpful as the test pics were bad quality). The questions were hard, some helpful and some rediculous.

The pediatric board review was very good as was the question book. This is the book I would get if I had limited time to study. Very high yield. It doesn't waste your time. It contrasts the content with similar dz and points out the differences right away. With laughing I sometimes had to go back to review similar sounding syndromes. It repeats itself but this is what you need as that is what the boards test. Ashish (the author) has sample chapters on his website so you can look at it and see what I mean.

Lastly, I hated medstudy. Way too much info without emphasis on high yield. I felt like I was in a forest looking at all the individual leaves and not seeing the trees. I would skip these books. However their question bank is very good.

Hmmm, like I said I am definitely interested in your advice. Maybe I will buy everything (LOL!) because people in my residency program say mixed things. Generally they say the laugh your way board review is a must. They also say Medstudy is good to have but can be very dense. To be honest, I have not heard much about pediatric board review except here. Non of my attendings have heard of it.

PBR is not very expensive, like $150 for book and questions, but I feel worth every penny.

Hey, do you have any used LYW? I am looking to get another copy because I have marked up the one I bought originally with notes! Preferably the 5th edition of the pediatric board review because I really prefer not to pay full price for a second one.

Thanks for your info on how you prepared for the boards. Just curious what is PBR (pediatric board review)????? Is it a book, course, or web based resource?

I have heard mixed reviews on this. I am taking the boards in October and opted to not get PBR after hearing a few reviews from people who went through my program. However, I do not know anything about the class they offer. I generally think it's best to shy away from classes.

At first I thought I would take a class, but cost aside (which is fairly prohibitive), I think preparing for the exams is best done for most with good review texts and study habits. I am tackling this with the mindset that it is in depth review rather than reinventing the wheel which I have heard classes tend to do.

To answer your question: I would keep away from PBR, maybe get it after going through the main texts of medstudy and LYW. I can't vouch for PBR's specific class, but I would generally recommend not taking a class.

This is just my personal opinion so far going through the process, but it may change depending on if I pass or not ;-)
