I'm going to be taking Physiology in the fall and don't really like the textbook that is recommended for the class.

So basically, what is hands down the BEST physiology text book?

So far I have been recommended:

http://www.amazon.com/Guyton-Hall-Textbook-Medical-Physiology/dp/1416045740/ref=zg_bs_227603_2

and

http://www.amazon.com/Physiology-ST...343253537&sr=8-4&keywords=physiology+textbook

EDIT: Now I'm looking for a biochem textbook lol.

You guys have any in mind? I asked around a bunch of friends and got these so far:

Lehninger
http://www.amazon.com/Lehninger-Pri...275681&sr=8-1&keywords=biochemistry+lehninger

Lippincott
http://www.amazon.com/Biochemistry-...eviews-Series/dp/160831412X/ref=zg_bs_13511_5

Voet

The best textbook is the human body. Get a cadaver if you can.

I liked Animal Physiology: From Genes to Organisms. Word to the wise, as the title implies, it focuses on animal physiology and not just human physiology.

Ah, sorry I didn't clarify. Should be a human physiology textbook lol. Thanks for the replies though

Costanzo is god(dess).

Not sure if you really need to use a textbook for undergrad physio though. If you do, I'd recommend the Costanzo one. It's pretty short (only like 550 pgs I think) and the explanations are spectacular! She takes difficult concepts and makes them really easy to understand.

Yeah, but I was looking at the book needed for that course and it was A&P by Martini.. didn't look that good to me. The Constanzo looks great and is relatively cheap too. I not only want to ace the class, but really want to learn the info so when it comes to the MCAT, it won't be a big deal.

Used Silverthorn's Human Physiology last year. I liked it. Very straightforward and nicely organized.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looked on Amazon and it's around ~150. I think Constanzo is the best bang for buck.

"Netter's Anatomy" isn't physiology but it's a great anatomy book.

For my undergrad physio class I used Human Physiology: From cells to systems. By Lauralee Sherwood. This book is simply amazing! It has beautiful figures, and the explanations for each chapter are long enough to where you learn the system in detail, but simple enough for even a novice to make sense of it. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Thanks for the replies guys.. I ended up going with Constanzo's because the price was like half of everything else and it had great reviews

Don't have any new suggestions, but I've also had good experiences with Guyton and Sherwood for physiology - both read very nicely and Sherwood is excellent for introductory physiology (at least in my opinion).

Voet biochemistry is a detailed book, I found it a good general biochem reference for 300/400 level classes, but wouldn't necessarily read it cover to cover because it's pretty dense.

I second that.

I love this book, the pictures are pretty and it's easy to understand.

There are older versions on amazon which are cheaper.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Anyone have any preferences on a biochem textbook?

"Human Physiology--An Integrated Approach" 5ed by Silverthorn
The concepts in this book are explained extremely clearly, and it reinforces a lot of basic biology that you need to understand the more complex physiology. The diagrams are great. This book will definitely cover everything you need for an undergrad physiology course, and it is EXTREMELY helpful for the MCAT. It gave my the perfect background to understand the majority of "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine," a book used by many medical students and doctors.

"Principles of Biochemistry" 5ed by Morgan, Horton, Scrimgeour, and Perry
Admittedly, this is the only biochem text I've read, but I have no complaints. I does a great job of incorporating and explaining all of the gen chem, organic chem, cell bio, evolutionary, and physiological aspects of biochem. The text isn't as bland as I imagine a lot of biochem texts are.

Oops didn't see this. Just FYI, you can "borrow" most of these texts from the internet if you know where to look...

Agreed with Sherwood for Physiology. Lehninger for biochem was nice as well.

So I ended with Lippincott for Biochem and Castanzo for Physiology. Got both textbooks for $80 total! They're both relatively short (~500 pages). Really excited to use them instead of the ones that my university suggested (which would've run me a total of $300 new and they were both 1200+ pages). I'll update the thread once my class starts and I start using them

Sheerwood. it explains the concepts so easy that it is not impossible to remember the whole book if you have enough dedication.
