If it were important to you to live in a nice area, with a lower cost of living, and go to a school with a solid curriculum and reputation, and were an out-of-stater, which school would you apply to, if you were applying to one last school and it had to be one of the following?

NYCOM, DMU, LECOM, CCOM, PCSOM, COMP, TOURO?

LECOM has a really really low cost of living, and their curriculum seemed pretty solid. They just like to tell you what to wear and you have to come to class, and do hospital assignments when they tell ya. Unless you go ISP or PBL...

Why are you limited to those schools?

no, i just liked the look of those schools from some superficial research; i'm applying to OUCOM and AZCOM and i just wanted to apply to 1-2 more DO schools in addition to the allo schools i'm applying to this summer

What kind of housing/living expenses do you want to pay?
Do you have any scholarships?
What kind of climate/evironment/weather are you interested in (Humid, wet, dry, cold)?
Which Touro (CA or NV)? Which PCOM(PA or GA)?

Well, I am limiting myself from applying to schools like USC, or GW because the cost of living is so high. I live in OH now and for 500/mo I have a great apt. I sort of don't want to live in a crappy apt for 1200/mo, you know? Plus, I have no savings and I'm unsure that loans in a big city will hack it for me. I would love a climate other than OH (so yeah, warm preferably would be great); I am confident in my stats for DO schools so I sort of feel like I might be able to be a bit choosier in terms of location and what not, so I'm curious as to what the better schools so to speak are as I just want 2 or so more to apply to in addition to OUCOM and AZCOM which are my for sures.

DMU hooks you up with a PDA and laptop computer (included with your tuition). Pikeville hooks you up with computers, books, and pays for examination and activity fees, and is quite inexpensive compared to some of the other DO schools.
Touro University is a great school, and the California campus has student housing.
I have heard a lot of great things about WVCOM, and PCOM, etc. I would love to check out PCSOM. If you go out there, write about it okay.

Have you looked at KCOM.
kCOM has a very impressive match list, one of the best among all the DO schools AND KCOM is a highly reputed DO school.

Yeah impressive but not what you would expect from the founding school of osteopathy!! Many other D.O. schools rival or surpass KCOM match list.

The OP stated "living in a nice area."

That would explain omitting this school.

The schools which take the most out-of-staters include KCOM, KCUMB-COM, DMU-COM, CCOM, and AZCOM.

Of your list, the best 2 schools (per your criteria) are CCOM and DMU-COM, by far.

TuCOM -NV is pretty a nice place to live but last year their houesing rates when through the roof. IF you can buy a home it would be great but as far as renting it is about $900 a month if you don't have roomates.

Pikville (PCSOM) for sure...

Great community support, great area to live and study, up and coming town, school pays for laptop, scrubs, coat, reviews, dues, test equip, OMM table, and a few more things...great and friendly staff, profs, and students...four season climate...great pick of schools....

I'd be very careful in choosing schools that were founded within the last 5-10 years. Many of these schools do not have well established residencies and hospital rotations, and very few of them have their own university hospital. Make sure you don't have to go through hell to take care of student rotations.

You simply don't know what you are getting into with some of these newer schools, especially those that haven't graduated a class yet. Of course, it's better than not going anywhere.

I'm sure there are some exceptions, so no need to defend your "new" school, guys. Just keep in mind that the foundation isn't as solid as schools built 30 years ago or more.

Your statment is rude, egotistical, and narrow sighted. I needn't defend anything, just bring light to a statment of intellectual prejudice, and possibly a personal sense of low esteem.

To the original poster, choose a school you are comfortable with and suits your needs. I have and am enjoying its fruits...

Oh, OSUdoc08 I'm sure there is a good explaination, but ah, "no need to defend" your post....

Wow. Way to be defensive. I don't think OSUdoc meant anything mean by his post... and what he said actually makes sense.... He didn't say newer schools were necessarily bad, just that they may not have the same connections and may not have worked out all the kinks of running a medical school.

Ummm Ok... Kind of like saying the one of the oldest medical schools in the nation (ie. University of Louisville) should have a much better match list than UCLA. This whole match list thing is kind of off. KCOM is a great school and our match list is great also. Not any better/worse than a bunch of other schools too. The big thing is how motivated you are as a residency applicant. You can come from the worst DO school in the universe and still match DO ENT (like <15 spots nationally) if you are motivated and work hard. So I would leave out the match list thing and look at where you want to live, and MORE IMPORTANTLY where you will be doing your rotations at. People often times over look this aspect. But our 1st 2 years are very similiar (save some variations in OMM) across the board. Its your 3-4th years that will help applicants stand out from others. Also if you are able to go to a school that has rotations at a hospital that you want to do residency at... This is HUGE.

Good luck,
FG

I agree. I know I may have deviated from the topic a bit, but the ultimate question is "Is this school for me?" Then put the work into it to get what you want from it.....As per residencies, do some reseach as to what program you may feel any gravitation towards and go to it...well good luck ...

Based on your filters, I'd say apply to DMU, LECOM, and PCSOM. Not sure about COMP - don't know enough about it.

Post some pics of T&A, and ill be the judge of that. Dont bother showin your face. I gots a paperbag to handle that.

you won't need a paperbag.

because you won't be seeing me anytime soon,

The cost of living at KCOM is very low. We are a family of four and my wife found us a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, + family room/play room (besides living room), garage, 1 mile from campus - $500 per month.

It is a small town. I like that. You might not.

Good luck!
