Which major from ASUs pre-med list should I choose? http://prehealth.asu.edu/degreeoptions

I personally want to do Biochemistry (Medicinal Chem) because it looks most interesting and well prepares you for the MCAT. Let me know other options that would be better for MED SCHOOL! Thankyou. Also try to list pro's and con's of the major you think would be best! Also can someone give me pro's and con's of the major Biochemistry (Medicinal) for pre-med? THANKS!

Double Majoring seems really difficult and I think it would put my GPA at risk! I've heard the chem engineering has good job prospects if med school doesn't work out but that is a little to "risky"! Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks man!!

I want to emphasize this from that website:
If a student is interested in a doctoral health career, they are not required to major in a science to be a pre-medical or pre-dental student. Students admitted to U.S. medical schools and the other professions come from all possible undergraduate majors. Students should choose a major based on their interests. At ASU a large majority of students who went on to medical schools have majored in biology, chemistry, psychology, physics and engineering. However, it is not unusual for someone who majors in political science, English literature, sociology or a nonscience field to be accepted, if the student receives acceptable grades in the required undergraduate science work.
You can major in whatever you want. No one can make this decision for you. No major is "better" than the others. The only important factor is which one YOU are most interested in.

That being said, If I had to pick from that list I would choose the 'Biology & Society' major. It actually sounds VERY interesting and relevant to medicine/my personal interests. Also, it includes a mandatory research project.

Edit: just saw they had a class called "immunophilosophy." I'm intrigued...

I was kidding.
I would choose Molecular Bioscience.

Someone else who goes to ASU? It's like the streams are crossing...

Seriously though, just take whatever interests you. I personally started college as Biochem (Medicinal Chem) and it's probably the best of the chemistry majors in terms of being a good mix of organic and inorganic chemistry. I would recommend it over the regular Biochemistry major. That being said, if you find you start tripping up in your chem classes, switching over to a biology major (especially microbio or molecular bio) can be easier and more interesting. Most premeds I know do Animal Phys.

Don't do engineering if you're looking for an easy way out (duh). In general, I think science classes at ASU are approaching ridiculously easy status. Feel free to PM me personally if you want any recommendations RE: classes and professors!

Did you go to ASU? How was the rigor of Biochem (Medicinal)? Was it easy to maintain stellar GPA? Are you still a Biochem major? Thank you very much!!!!! I will try to add you in my contacts🙂 Also, are you a Barrett student?

I just registered today, can you please explain?

I'm still at ASU! I'll be applying this year.

How easy or difficult you find the major is really up to your skills as a student. Most of the people I know did very well. As long as you put in the work and pick the right professors, you should never get a C, so it's fairly easy to maintain the right GPA. Of course, if you ARE getting C's and D's, that might be a hint that you need to switch majors as soon as you're done with your prerequisites.

I'm not a biochemistry major anymore. I switched to a non-science major to pursue a research topic I love.

Yes, I am a Barrett student.

By the content of your post(s) I guessed that you were a senior in high school. If this assumption is correct then hSDN (the sub-forum for high school and pre-college students) is a more appropriate location for your question so I moved it here.

I am an asu grad, I majored in chemistry. If I could do it over again, I would have done got a BSN (nursing). Other possibilities include Spanish. Remember all you need is two years of chemistry, one to two of biology and one of physics. Enjoy and go sundevils! Also do they still do the super cheap/free tuition if you graduate from an AZ high school with a 3.0/4.0? I loved that cheap tuition, and laugh at other residents who have scary large students loans to repay!

That makes sense, sorry, I am fairly new and don't know much! Thanks though!

Rachm: Yes its called Aims Tuition waiver. Now it requires Exceeding on all three subject, 3.0GPA or higher, 1300 m+cr SAT score, and other stuff!!!!

I went asu and majored in biochem, non medicinal. I thought it was a great major and felt well prepared for the mcat in terms of background info. I was also in Barrett back before theynmoved to that snazzy campus that Dean Jacobs made happen.

Coincidentally I'm sitting in sky harbor right now on my way to NYC and I just say president crowe walk by 😀

Did barrett help a lot with med school admission? Also, was your GPA pretty good cause some say the major is hard?! THanks

It helps in indirect ways. Better access to research, programs, classes, etc. I had a very good gpa in my major, but yes it is a more difficult major. Your gpa has much more to do with you more than anything else.

And it only covers 25% of the tuition.
