I used DIT and Step-up to Step 1 and 2 for both COMLEX and USMLE boards, so I know that I work well as a visual learner, but my memory sucks so I always need to write extensive and detailed notes as I watch videos. I am planning on getting Hippo EM, but I can't figure out what book will work best as a companion to the videos. I have the First Aid for the EM boards... it is colorless and boring. I have Rosens, but I really don't think its the type of book that would work best for high yield board review. Unfortunately, there is no Step-up to EM in the near future (I emailed the publisher and asked, they have no plans for making this book... We should seriously all riot about this). I know there are a few other EM board review books (Carol Rivers), but they are also colorless. I need colors to keep my mind engaged. 😛

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a review book that works well with Hippo EM?

If you want a book and prefer colors the perfect book for you is the Ultimate EM Guide (find it on amazon). Never seen or heard of 'Stepup to EM' - Rosh Review is good but not available in book form obviously

I am reading through the Ultimate Emergency Medicine Guide and would definitely recommend it. You might be able to correlate the sections with Hippo EM, but I have not actually tried (I used Hippo EM as a resident and really liked it, though). But you could review the topic in the text and then watch the Hippo EM videos and vice-versa and I think it would be beneficial. It's full-color and easy to read.

Noshie, the HippoEM videos have full bulleted show notes that work as the best companion to the videos. I've been using these, but I'm also looking for another review book. I'm really wondering if anyone actually reads through Tintinalli. Sadly the Ultimate ER Guide doesn't seem to be available on amazon

It's available again - updated to include some new info (apparently rasburicase for tumor lysis syndrome is now clinically relevant for EM docs)

The Ultimate EM Guide is always being updated based on recent test-taker feedback. I've never heard of or used rasburicase before, but based on feedback it's been known to pop up on the exam. I think we've all taken enough board exams by now to know that they aren't a very accurate reflection of what we actually see in clinical practice.

@Arcan57, did you ever treat TLS with anything other than IV fluids in the ED?

Yes. But to be fair the missus is heme/one.

Anyone use this book exclusively for in service exam and do well?

Thanks for all the helpful feedback guys! I checked out the Ultimate EM Guide book on Amazon, and I am definitely going to get it. I did see the electronic Hippo EM notes that they give out with the videos, but the one I looked at so far is black and white without any pictures (though the videos will have tons of pictures of course).

Are any of you guys reading Tintinalli's or Rosens with this to supplement? Last year I read very little Rosens & just did Rosh review which led to a good inservice score.

Thanks in advance for your replies

I ended up buying the Ultimate EM Guide a few months ago. It is literally the best EM book I own. Hands down. Its very easy to read and is super high yield. Before conference almost every week, I read the sections of the book that are related to one or two of the topics in our lectures. The high yield of most of the lectures are straight from this book. A few weeks ago, we had wilderness day, and I read the environmental chapter a few days prior... I got most of the questions at every station correct, more than the 3rd and 2nd years on my team. This book is gold.

I own Tintin and Rosens... and the First Aid EM for the boards book. But the Ultimate EM Guide is the only one I even open anymore. I haven't had to supplement much with the bigger texts like Rosens, plus those are super wordy and sometimes a section can really say a lot without even saying anything because of the wordiness. I also do a chunk of Rosh Review questions every month. The explanations seem to be pretty inclusive and the questions aren't too brutal. Im hoping that the inservice is similar...
