I've got a question for you guys with regards to away rotations. I'm planning on applying for the next cycle and I'm trying to line up the best electives for my application.

I applied to a program for a 2 month Anesthesia elective and they told me I can only do 1 month per elective for their program. Instead I can apply for Critical Care, Pain Management or something else entirely for the other month. My other option would be to apply to another program for another Anesthesia elective.

Now my question is, since I'm already at a disadvantage not being an AMG, should I try and rotate at another program to increase my exposure, take another Anesthesia related elective, or take an elective in something else entirely?

Basically, what do you guys think would best improve my chances at matching, or is there very little difference?

Thanks!

I'd say rotate at two different places for 4 weeks each. Make sure you choose to rotate at places that have taken an FMG/IMG in the past two years or so. Also, make sure your board scores are at least average or higher than the program you're rotating at.

Hx of IMG/FMG in program + Personal exposure + avg to above avg scores = higher chance of matching

Best of luck.

For Sure.

Thanks for the replies.

If I'm unable to secure a spot at another program, is it better to do another Anesthesia related elective or is there something else that PDs might look at favorably that I should explore?

Prob go with CC, Pain, CVICU or MICU, pulm

I agree with the above. However, when I was on acute pain I learned very little at my school and when interviewing ... they asked what anesthesia related rotations an I planning for fourth year. They were pretty unimpressed when I mentioned pain. I would stick with critical care ... shows work ethic and you actually learn something

agreed - make sure you are IM competent, and can give a good oral report to the intern/resident/attending/CEO of the hospital/yo mama. UCSD med kids drill oral report from the womb, and they end up looking like rockstars even if they know absolutely nothing about medicine. (Back off UCSD kids, that's a complement)

polish your presentation skills until they shine, and do some critical care. You will get a strong req letter and impress the program - good luck
