Hi all,

I'm moving to Beantown this summer and will be there for a year while preparing for postbacc. Don't know exactly which area yet--Brookline or even Cambridge, if I can find a place that won't completely break the bank--but definitely somewhere with easy access to the T, since I won't have a car. Anyway, I'd like to know which of the area's many medical institutions would be most likely to offer a volunteer opportunity with significant patient contact and a moderate weekly time commitment (6-8 hrs/wk). I have no previous volunteer experience.

Thanks for any feedback you may be able to offer!

Hi there,

I live in Boston and would highly recommend living in the Brookline area (Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village, Brookline Hills) or the Longwood Medical Area. These areas are all very close to the city, but also fairly safe and some areas, especially Brookline Hills, have a bit of a suburban feel to them: quiet, some grass, trees, parks, etc. As for volunteer opportunities, I have heard very good things about the program at Beth Israel:

They even give you free food!!!

Excellent, finally an answer to my post! Thanks for your input.

Same Q, but a little further west .... any opportunities near Worcester? (UMass Med School, I guess - anywhere else?)

You're welcome. Feel free to PM me if you have any general questions about Boston. I am a bit swamped with work right now but could get back to you after the 28th.
