hey guys do any of you know what is the best and easiest, cheapest etc way to get from BWI to downtown d.c? especially during rush hour morning traffic?? any help would be much much appreciated! thanks you gusy are great

Do you have an interview? If so,

Probably easiest to take the MARC. It's about an hour between downtown stations, maybe 45 min from the airport to downtown DC? It's pretty cheap, too, I think.

The other option is renting a car and taking 295, which you DON'T want to do in a.m. traffic.

I just moved here, so maybe another Baltimore person can answer you more definitively. 🙂

The MARC is a train, BTW ... and I see now that your sig says you are starting GW, so I guess your interview went pretty well. 😉

you have severally options
(1) MARC train to Union Station then either cab to Gdub or take red line to metro center to transfer to orange/blue line to get to Foggy Bottom metro station...i am not sure how often the MARC leaves from BWI...but i think its something like every half hour

(2) airport metro shuttle (not sure exact name) to greenbelt metro station (i believe?)...you will have to transfer (greenbelt is green line)...you can transfer at fort trotten/gallery place chinatown to the red line...once on the red line transfer to blue/orange line at metro center...or you can transfer at L'Enfant Plaza when on the green line to orange/blue line

(3) Blue van or that type of transport

I definitely would not recommend renting a car its really not worth it and 295 or 95 are a biznatch in the morning with traffic not to mention DC especially around Gdub...its murder

hope that helps

As of last summer MARC did not connect to Union station and I believe it still doesn't. You can check out the BWI airport website at www.bwiairport.com for specifics in the ground trasportation section and click on BWI Express Metro bus . This is by far the cheapest alternative. It is about $4 total to get to GW. You just take the express bus to the greenbelt subway station, then take the metro to the foggy bottom exit. wallah...you are at GW. Taxis are incredibly expensive, and the metro system in D.C. is one of the best I've been on. Hope that helps. For the entire trip I would plan on an hour or so. I missed the bus on the way back to BWI airport last summer and had to take a taxi. It cost around $40!!! compared to $2 on the bus.

what happened to the marc??

i used to live there and i took the marc from bwi all the time - it was only 6 dollars back in the day... but i never heard of the shuttle bus - that sounds even better! and by better, i of course mean CHEAPER.

do NOT take blue van if you want cheap - they'll eat you alive!

I went to the bwi website and they still had info on the marc trains there, under ground transportation. are you sure they no longer connect to union station? i'm the one making this trip which is why i'm concerned 🙂 thanks so much. you guys really are so helpful.

viennese, i just had to say you sound like such a nice girl in all of your posts 🙂 you're going to hopkins, right? congrats, i'm positive you deserve it 🙂

the marc still goes from BWI to union station to the best of my knowledge...just doesnt run on the weekends

i would use either the marc or use the shuttle that takes you to greenbelt and then hop on the metro

YES, DEFINITELY TAKE THE MARC TRAIN! And like everyone else said take the bus to the greenbelt shuttle from the airport if u r coming on a weekend.

Aw, shucks ... [blush] ... you probably haven't read enough of my posts, though. 😉

 Yes, I'm starting Hopkins in about two weeks, and pretty darn excited about it. Do YOU have an interview at GW? If so, good luck!

Anyway, check out Maryland's Mass Transit Administration at http://www.mtamaryland.com/schedules/marc/marc_schedule.cfm According to this site, the marc DOES go to Union station, but it wasn't clear from a cursory glance whether there is a direct line from BWI to Union--it would be pretty silly if not, as they are major destinations which many travelers would need linked. Hope that helps.

BWI---> MARC to unioin station, DC ($7)------> RED LINE metro to metro center----> Orange line to GW ($2.20)!!

Total time 1:00 +/- 15 min.

I take that same trip every damn day of the week from Hopkins to DC.....its a real pain in the arse!

Ok guys, I need your help once again. I'm flying into BWI this Friday night, getting in at 9:30 pm or so...I am 99% sure the marc still runs that late to union...do you think i should go the marc-->union route even though it's late on a friday night or take a cab from BWI to GW? The bf thought the latter would be safe and the first wouldnt...but I have to say, a heck of a lot more expensive.

but oh wait...it's friday, so does the marc even run at that time?

The MARC runs that late or you could get in touch with me and I'd drop you off for free.

If i were you, the BF would be picking me up or the BF would be no longer....

XCanadian, what a nice offer! 🙂 I think I'll just take a cab...it will be late and dark and that train station you go to to get from BWI to Union Station is scary 🙂 Plus the bf said he'd spring for the cab...

Exmike...yeah, really! 🙂 What am I thinking? 😉

speaking of your gw bf, i interviewed there today. it seems like a bunch of the interview group took the bwi metro shuttle bus to the greenbelt metro, then to foggy bottom. thats probably the most economical alternative.

Hey, congrats on your GW interview!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Anyway, yeah that route is very economical. The first time I flew into BWI I took the airport shuttle to the marc station to union station and then took a cab to GW....so the grand total was $6 for the train and $8 for a cab...economical to say the least. I could have made it a teeny bit cheaper if I'd gone the metro route but I've never been one to care that much about money and I'd never experienced the metro anyway so it would have just been a big headache...plus I'm just a small town girl...although I've been in Columbus for a year now.. I would totally go this route again tommorrow, except I'm a little wary because it's going to be going on 10 pm when I even get into the airport.
