From what i've heard the best source for microbiology is made ridiculously simple and lange. for pathology its robbins(the big one) the review book and rapid review by golijan.

are these books sufficient for the step or should I be looking at other ones?

The consensus on the forums seems to be for Step 1 prep beyond First Aid that CMMRS is best for micro and either RR or BRS for Path. Keeping your resources at a minimum and knowing them very well is probably a better strategy than having more books.

For what this is worth as Micro and Path were my two best shelf exams (95+%) last year.

I liked Robbins for reference only and used Golijan and Robbins Review of Path and Webpath on at least a weekly basis for path. I also liked Path Deja Review. I thought BRS was crap.

CMMRS was okay just very, very long. I am not a huge fan of the made easy series and read through it maybe once. I used Micro Recall and Micro/Immuno Deja Review. I also used High Yield Immuno. They served me well.

I also looked over first aid but would caution people from relying on it exclusively for shelf exams.

cmmrs is one of the best books ever. it comes in handy long after 2nd year micro class. if you are a visual learner you'll never forget the pictures and the stories behind them and they will help you on exams and on the wards. i still use that book frequently, and it's one of the only books i've kept.

for path, robbins review is the best, but the questions are a little harder than you will see on the shelf or on step 1. that said, a few questions on each of our path exams were taken straight from robbins review. i used brs too, which i thought was good shelf prep.

CMMRS is ok for class, but it is too longwinded for board prep. Get some micro cards and make sure to pay attention when doing questions and you will be fine. Again, robbins (and the question book) are great for class time, but not so great for boards. Get RR and supplement it with BRS.
