what would you guys consider to be the best and worst types of research to do for someone who's not sure about what type of medicine they want to get into. would it be best to do something related to a competitive specialty (ortho, ent, etc.)? would it be a waste of time if you did research in one of the less competitive specialties and eventually decided that you didn't want to enter that specialty?

i know the easy answer would just be to do research in whatever i am interested in but the problem is that i'm interested in just about everything.

Since you say you are interested in everything, I say do whatever pays best and whatever is easiest to get. If an FP is just begging for someone to help out with a trial and the hours match up, grab it. It took me many hours of internet exploring to find my summer research job...so much so that I didn't apply for any other research jobs as by the time I was done with it, I was exhausted.

Find someone who is interested in publishing papers with medical students.

As a general example, would a FP clinical paper help you get a Derm or Rad residency?

I personally think it helps. It's better than doing research and not having anything to show for your hard work. 😉
