Hopefully a similar thread has not been created, but if it has, mods. please feel free to merge. I thought I would start a thread where students can exchange tips and advice for internship year. This could also be a place for those moving to new locations and need advice on various cities (i.e. housing, transportation, etc).

I am moving to Chicago next year for internship and am starting to plan out my housing situation. Being there are many Psychology programs in Chicago, I was curious if anyone or if anyone knows someone that is looking to rent or sublet their place for the year? Think it would be convenient to rent/sublet a fellow Psychology grad students place for the year as they are away on internship as well. This would also be a great opportunity to keep your place if you plan on coming back, and not have to move your whole life for a year, or put things in storage. Also, I am not looking forward to lugging my stuff half-way across the country, or buying new furniture, especially if I might only be there for a year. We're all fairly responsible  , so I figured what better then to rent to a fellow Psychology graduate student!

I've looked on Craigslist, but am always skeptical if its some type of scam, so would be much more comfortable renting from a fellow graduate student. Any advice on ways seek out housing would be greatly appreciated too. I have only been to Chicago once, so any advice would be great. Please feel free send me a private messages with general Chicago advice or advice on housing that you may feel is specific to my situation.

Otherwise, if you have advice that is generally helpful for everyone on this forum, please feel free to post it publicly.

I usually google the local medical school pages, international students, or other professionals (i.e. law/dental) and see if they have pointers for off-campus housing. Sometimes the data is a little outdated (Rent prices), but they usually put good places that past students have lived and recommend. The schools themselves may also have sublet pages set up, etc

Also, I use city-data for information regarding areas of town that are safe, etc. You could also post your questions there and see if locals can also provide additional information.

Finally, since you say Chicago, I would also look at the forum for The Grad Cafe for Chicago and see if past students make recommendations for Chicago.

These are generally the starting point. It's always best to schedule a visit and get a feel for the apartment/neighboorhood etc.

Thanks @PurplePants80 and @JonSnow really helpful advice! I'll be interning in-between downtown and Evanston, so somewhere on the red line is preferable. Logan Square seems like a great area, so I will look into it - Thanks!

Hopefully everyone else could utilize this thread for the move next year!

Is it common to keep track of your hours during internship (I use T2T)? Will anyone ask about how much time I spent doing XXX? For example, when applying for post docs, would it be helpful to have that information? My program doesn't require it, so I'm trying to decide if I need to still keep track of my hours.

I am also interested in knowing if anyone has any advice/do & don'ts about internship year in general. How can we make the most of it? Is there anything you wished you knew going into internship that you can pass along to those about to start?

You'll likely have to report the clinical hours for your licensure application, but I think at that point, most people estimate/go with the standard response for a full-time internship year. Your internship TD will likely be able to tell you what this number is, and/or what standard practice is for their site (since he/she will ultimately have to sign off on your hours).

Housing seems uber expensive in the San Francisco Bay area, anyone have suggestions on neighborhoods with reasonable housing prices?

I lived in Chicago during graduate school. Although I do agree that Logan Square is cheap, it's not the most convenient neighborhood, especially if you're trying to get to Evanston. I would suggest going to Chicago and setting up an appointment with Apartment People. It's a free service and they will take you to available apartments based on your needs (close to public transit, amenities, etc.). That's how I got my apartment.

Lakeview is a great neighborhood, and you can find some nicer places for fairly cheap. It's also close to the red line. Just stay away from Wrigleyville!
