Bifunctional molecules??

In my ochem text, at the end of the chapter on Sn1 and Sn2 reactions, they talk about molecules with 2 functional groups called bifunctional molecules

It says if two functional groups are able to react with each other, two kinds of reactions can occur, intermolecular and intramolecular rxns

I just skimmed it over because I havent seen this in any DAT prep material(although I havent started using ochem in destroyer yet) and my brain is kinda fried at the moment.

Has anyone seen this before?
 
I think its just referring to the fact it can react with itself or with other molecules.

As an example ethanol can react with a carboxylic acid to form hydrogen bonds and a carboxylic acid can also react with itself to form hydrogen bonds, both intra and intermolecular rxns. This is if both are in a container with one another. Hope this helps.

Dieckmann Condensation is an example of such reaction, where you could have an intramolecular reaction that leads to cyclization:
