Hi everyone,

I attend one of the big 4 Carrib schools and am a USIMG. I really would like some advice and would really appreciate any feedback.

USIMG
-Step 1: 195 (Going through rough patch with family) 1st attempt
-Step 2 CK: 254 (1st attempt)
-Step 2 CS: passed (1st attempt)
No step failures
-85+ on all shelf exams and honored a few rotations.
-will be ready to apply day 1 when ERAS opens with 3-4 electives done
-will be able to complete step 3 before the match (does this help?)
- I have been apart of 2 publications while doing research

I have always been interested in family medicine and this is by far the only specialty I want to apply to. I would be willing to go anywhere for 3 years. I know my step 1 score is really low (barely passed) but I’m hoping my step 2 score and my LORwill help me.

I am looking to apply to 200+ family med programs. What are my chances looking like ?

thanks

Hard to predict...as there haven't been many applicants with a such a discrepancy between S1 and S2 scores.
Plugging your data into the Interactive NRMP data, there have only been 5 people with your stats apply to FM from 2014-2018. Of those 5, 3 didnt match and 2 did, for an effective match rate of 40%. If you expand the data set and look at Step 1 < 200 and Step 2 220-250 and focus on the most recent 2 years of data, 64 matched and 50 didnt....for an effective match rate of 56%. So I'd put your chances somewhere in the 50/50 range.

Your chance is poor due to the really low step1 score. Some programs has a step 1 cut off around 200~210. Try and apply to all programs that took IMG.

Do you have any connection with any programs or have strong LOR lined up?

Go look at the SOAP thread on reddit. It’s mostly IMGs with your same application.

I would put your chance at 55-65%... If you add 50+ low tier pathology programs to your list, your chances will be much higher (90%+).

If I were you, I would apply to ~200 FM programs and ~75 path programs. It's better to be a physician with 350k student loan than not being a physician at all.

My point is to go big or go home because if you fail to match the first time, your chances go down dramatically in subsequent cycle.

I am a non-US img requiring a visa.

I had a low step 1, step 2 in the 220s. Wanted FM from the start. Had some volunteering on my app, nothing crazy. Graduated from big 4 carib.

Went to the family med conference and met with a few PDs. Had 6 interviews this season, I matched.

Apply broadly, go to the AAFP conference. You'll be fine
