Hello Dear SDN people,

I want to do UG research next summer(2010).
I would prefer to do at some top U.S schools, but I don`t know if it is possible to get into those with my issue.
My GPA is 4.0
  • Work: Math Tutor/Leader
  • Starting Research, almost started
  • Have done 100+ Volunteer work
  • I know 3-4 human+1 comp lang
  • Expecting good LORS
  • Pretty diverse background.
BUT

I am a recent immigrant and used to go to top schoool in my country. However, after coming to U.S I had no SAT score and I enrolled to pretty low ranked school.

That is why I am worried that will it make sence If I apply to TOP School research positions from my current school.

Some of them mention:
(1) whose participation will add to the diversity of researchers in the sciences, ...or (3) who are from institutions that do not have large research programs.

I know that I can add diversity and I am coming from school with limited research. But most of their alumni are grom Princeton/Yale/Wyoming State/Harvard/.

Should I spend my time applying to those schools for summer programs, or I better stick with regional little programs.

Have anyone gotten into those programs from small schools?

a) I'm not really sure that where you do research really matters as long as you work hard and get a stipend for a summer program

b) In addition, you seem like you are a hardworking individual, and that will shine through despite your undergrad school when you apply to these things. I'm not sure that they pick from those schools only for summer programs-perhaps there are just more people from top schools trying to apply to the programs.

c) I know for a fact that there are programs out there that SPECIFICALLY cater to people in your situation in terms of getting URMs and stuff into research science. These are the types of programs you should DEFINITELY apply to (in addition to others of course). You just need to find them!

Programs that I know have summer research: Columbia, NYU, Einstein, Northwestern, WashU, MIT-I'm sure there are many many more. I'll try to find something and post it up for you, but definitely get started on the search!

Good Luck
