I was always wondering...

What are the biggest centers in terms of LINAC rooms / patients ?

Memorial Sloan Kettering, MD Anderson Cancer center (Houston, TX) and Princess Margaret In Toronto are all pretty big high-volume centers

These figures are tough to find on the net.

Like how many LINACs are we talking about? 20? 30? 40? How many patients per year? 10.000, 20.000?

I've heard anecdotally that PMH has 17 Linacs. Don't know that for sure. I am not sure of the others

The big centers have the most. MDACC treats ca. 300-400 pts per day. I think they have close to 20 linacs between the two buildings. Heard PMH treats 400+ pts per day -- the MACHINE. Some departments are really growing right now. Heard at ASTRO that Ohio State is getting seven (7!!!) TrueBeams at once for the new hospital, which'll be the 3rd largest (cancer hospital) in the country.

At the texas medical center campus, MDACC has 26 linacs + a gamma knife + proton center with 4 gantries. Not sure how many patients treated/day. They have a bunch of campuses all over the greater Houston area, outside of TX, and outside of the US with their own sets of linacs.

They tell us Moffitt Cancer Center is currently the 3rd largest in the country by patient volume. I couldn't give you patient numbers. There are seven linacs at the main center, I think three at the satellites, and a very active brachytherapy program.

Edit: when I last counted there was 17 full time rad oncs.

As someone doing my rad onc residency in ontario, last I checked, PMH/University of Toronto had 78 radiation oncologists with over 20,000 new patients/yr seen.

Yes at Moffitt we have 7 linacs at the main campus. The VA across the street has 3. We see pediatrics at Florida Hospital also across the street that has 2. A satellite in The Villages has 1 although we do not rotate there as residents.

Kaiser LA has 7 linacs at main center and 4 at satellite. 300-400 patients on treatment at any given time. ~20 attendings.
