Biggest decision of my life: please vote/chime in

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Considering the below points: would you apply ED to State U Med?

  • Apply ED: You have a terrible GPA, this is a reasonable choice where you'll be most successful

    Votes: 45 57.0%
  • Apply regular: If you'll get in ED, you'll get in regular!

Thanks for the poll responses so far. If you are able to say what you think are the determining factors in your decision, that would be great for me too

This is not the biggest decision of your life. The biggest decision of your life is to go popped collar vs. no popped collar. I vote for the affirmative.

And for this, don't take the chance. Apply widely and feel free to write a letter of intent/interest. People who do ED generally have better, not worse GPAs, and if you can get in ED, you can get in regular.

Given what you've laid out, I would apply ED. Do you feel you can trust them with getting back to you by mid-July? If you don't get in ED, adding other schools in mid-July wouldn't be a such a big deal - if you pre-write your secondaries, you could be complete by early August.

The people that get in with sub-3.0 GPAs seem to have higher MCAT scores than you. (Nevertheless, your score was awesome - congrats.)

I would do the early decision.

Why not just ask the adcom at your state school about your chances of getting in via regular decision (esp. since you already have strong connections with your state school)? You don't even have to bring up the early decision portion.

I generally would not advise ED, but the cons do not seem too bad in this situation. A big pro you left out is if you ED and get accepted, you will enter medical school next year. If you test the waters you may get waitlisted at a school with better facilities but never hear back leaving you stuck at your home institution presumably still doing research. If Jefferson's dean was sincere about not even considering you, it does seem risky. I don't think you should settle on a school "just because", but it seems like you could enjoy your time there.

I'm sad that this is the biggest decision you've ever had to make.+pity+

Also, to actually respond to your post, consider what happens if they don't actually keep with their word when they say they'll notify you about the ED by July. Screwedville, population you. Just food for thought.

Do you think your home program would hold it against you that they told you to apply ED and you didn't?

I second this. I have a friend that applied ED last year but they didnt get back to her until it was too late. I wouldn't risk it.
