Hey gang,

So I have only taken two intro bio courses and will be finishing my second semester of anatomy and physiology (already took biochem but that's under chem). During one of my interviews, the interviewer brought up what I though about my limited bio background and how I would handle the intense biological ciriculum of dental school. Since I'm graduating this semester, I was thinking of taking a few bio courses to address this weakness, and raise the gpa. Which ones do you think I should take:

  1. Medical Mycology 3cr
  2. Organismal Form and Function 5cr
  3. Cell Biology 3cr
  4. Nutrition 3cr
  5. Infectious Disease Ecology 3cr
  6. Biotechnology 3cr
  7. Microbiology 3cr

Also, I'm taking medicinal chemistry right now

Microbio is a definite! I would suggest Cell Bio, Nutrition, and either medicial mycology or organism form and function.

Just dont overload yourself and bomb these classes. Space em out over 2 semesters if necessary. I took many courses spaced out and it worked well for my GPA.

Microbiology and Cell biology are a plus for dental schools and can help you on the DAT if you haven't taken it yet. Everything else sounds good too. So go for what sounds interesting to you. However for an outside opinion, I would def vote for Infectious Disease Ecology. Great choices 👍

How many credits did you take a semester of post-bacc? I don't think I will be working and feel like I can do well in these classes. I feel I have a firm background after studying for the dat, taking biochem and both A&P courses.

It varied by semseter.

One more question, how many credits should I take since I will not be working? And would it look good/bad if I took microbio during the summer?

If you're not working take at least 12 to 16 credits. You dont want to seem like a slacker you know. Schools want to see that you can handle a heavy course load. It also doesnt matter if you take Micro over the summer. I took both APs over the summer and no one mentioned anything about that.

This would be the order I would choose:

1. Cell Biology
2. Microbiology 3cr
3. Infectious Disease Ecology 3cr
4. Organismal Form and Function 5cr
5. Medical Mycology 3cr
6. Biotechnology 3cr
7. Nutrition 3cr

😀

And since you're not working, I would commit to at least 12 credits. Preferably 15. 🙂 🙂

Good luck buddy!

Oh yea, it may also be very helpful to contact the admissions officer and get their opinion too 😀

Micro bio is a great course for sure! If I were you i would take 12-14 credits in case you want to pick up some work to make some cash during the semester. I would take 4 classes without labs or 3 classes with labs, however many credits that comes out to as long as it is at least 12.

Also, our physics department just deveolped a course on renewable energy. I was thinking of taking that and maybe an art course like U of MN suggested.

take easy science courses to boost your sGPA

wouldn't that kinda be artificial gpa inflation. I would look down on that if I was an adcom.

im not saying take 40 easy classes. if you take 2 to 3 classes. no one will down on you. plus would take them with hard classes so like AP, Biochem and an easy Psych class looks fine on paper. I dont suggest you take 4 psych classes in one semester and expect to look like a hero. Its your choice obv do what you like, I took easier courses when I could to boost my GPA and it helps when you have a bunch of A's in one semester 🙂 Its not like other people aren't doing this, so dont assume your putting yourself into a disadvantage when enough people took their prereqs at easier schools and got into d-school.
