Hello everyone. I was just wondering about the prospects of getting a consulting job at a company like Bain with a bio degree? Is it likely? And would I mostly be consulting in health care areas?

Other than research, what other jobs for bio majors are popular and have decent pay?

With just a B.S. in bio?

Not likely. You might be able to get an entry-level, grunt work type job, but that's about it.

Remember, in the world of science, people with "just" a bachelor's are at the bottom of the heap. All the people doing most of the consulting work at MD/DO's, PhDs, and perhaps some MPH types.

I can't really offer up too many suggestions for bio majors; most of the jobs you're truly qualified for are lab tech type positions. It's difficult to find anything else in science that's not low-level. Hec, in my NIH lab, the lab tech that ran PCRs all day had a master's. Clearly an undergrad degree doesn't hold much water. But if you're willing to look outside the world of straight up bio, you'll be able to find other options.

Thanks for the response.

Do you know if it's easy to find a job outside the science field with a bio major? I'm at Princeton, and I read about a bio major last year working with Citadel. My cousin double majored in biology and english at Rutgers and ended up landing a job at Goldman Sachs. Do employers see a someone with a science degree and value the prospective employee as someone who has good reasoning skills that can be applied to any field?

Really the logic is no different than medical schools accepting non-science majors. If you excel in one subject you may, with training, be able to excel at something else.

I have a friend who works at a mid-level investment bank and she was a bio major at Cal.

Totally possible, a friend went to one of the bigshot companies on wall street...well, not so big anymore.

Juss look @ bobby jindal, da governor of LA.....Bio major --> wurkd 4 mckinsey....Granted he wuz a rhodes scholar...But ive seen it happen and dats one big case whurr it did

oh my

I have a bio degree and I ended up working in IT for a few years.

I know people with bio degrees that work for oil companies, real estate, environmental consulting, the government, banking (hope they bailed early), sales, etc.

I would start by evaluating skills you have outside of having a bio degree and go from there.

Does anyone know what the average salary is for consultants at both large firms and at smaller biotech/pharm firms?

Just based on a quick search, I found that average first year salary for an investment banker is anywhere from 60-100k. I'm sure there's also a range for consultant salaries. I actually read an article once talking about the most glorified jobs, and investment banking was on the list. The average salary of an investment banker was listed as 70k (though when people talk about them they always mention the top end salaries).

I have no idea, but I came to this thread cuz your username is awesome!👍😍

man dat ibanker salary is dey base salary...dey get pretty much 100% bonus of dey base...base is usually 55-60k and den dey get dey massive bonus which makes it so disproportionate.....consultants at dem big companies like bain mckinsey and wyman etc. dey makin 50-60k i promise u dat. if u want more info, go to thevault.com...its kinda like an sdn for business folk, but check out some companies, dey list a range for some...honestly homie, i feel like if u goin dat route, u might as well take a look into biotech private equity firms...u usually require experience for dat, but folk be springboardin from banking and consultin to PE, but i think itd be ill as kcuf to be due diligence on biotech companies and seein dey potential for acquisiton

I was wondering whether it takes you extra time to type words out incorrectly...

I am sorry to offend, and I apologize on behalf of all my fellow colleagues on this forum. I usually tend to type like this. I have a personal distaste to the sloth that instant messaging has brought to the world. Many students now believe that it is permissible to write and speak as you are currently doing, in the real world, which in my opinion warrants a good look at how the current educational system is being conducted.

I dunno. You can use slang since it is a forum and not an English paper, but seriously that level of chat-speak is not only hard to read, but also annoying.

It's an art. You would basically destroy the realm of lyrical music if everyone spoke like that.

Naturally, you are allowed to use any slang you wish. (Although slang does tend to follow more understandable spelling and grammar rules than the above posts...) Unfortunately I can't seem to read it at a comfortable pace, so I just skip your posts. I will never know what it is you have to say 🙁

Academix is right. What do you care how he types? Your wasting time criticizing him while hes spending time helping out another poster. Don't you have anything better to do than berate someone else because of how they express themselves? If its hard for you to read then don't read it!

Hey, everyone. When you think someone is trolling please don't respond to their comments. Trolls just become more active when your feed them. When they are ignored, they become cranky and their hunger for attention drives them elsewhere.

If you smell troll, and they DO tend to have a certain odor about them, please use the

to alert the staff, so that we may investigate the situation. When you find them annoying, check out the "How to Beat a Troll Senseless" sticky at the top of the forum for instructions on how to add them to your Ignore List. Poof! No more assclown to mess up your conversation.

He got red flagged for typing in slang? That's pretty shady. He didn't attack anybody personally, he was the one BEING attacked. All he did was mind his own business and type the way he wanted. Why/How does that warrant a ban?

Discussion of enforcement actions is confidential between the member and staff. We do not discuss individual's infractions with other members. The cause for actions is not always apparent to the general readership. No one has been banned for any activity taking place in this thread at this time.

Please return to the original topic of discussion. This thread has been derailed long enough.

Does it work for mods? This "assclown" you want to ignore probably has the only useful posts in this thread.

"what i eat shouldnt make u ****."
'nuff said.

Ok ok, I take back my comments earlier, they were only posted for good fun. Judging from his post history, he's probably not a troll, but unless he like pm'd someone or something like that, it's a shame if he got red flagged because of this thread.

I appreciate the vote of confidence sir. Now believe me, I tried explaining what you said to this moderator, but it didn't seem to have any bearing on his decision. In short, he simply said he would ban me if I continued using colloquial vernacular in my posts--and in his opinion "trashing the English language", and "speaking garbage English" ...And despite pointing out that I was the only one adhering to the topic and trying to keep posts relevant, he insisted that I was somehow being the troll. It seems I overlooked him calling me an assclown until your post, but that incites a little more anger in me, because he also cited me for using inappropriate language aka cursing. I don't find this double standards surprising though--if SDN members continually and unjustly assault me, I wouldn't think of it being too far a stretch if a moderator did the same. Regardless, I think I know who the real assclown(s) is/are; and rather than get banned from perpetuating this nonsense, I will stringently adhere to his ridiculous mandate. However, through acts of defiance I promise to make overly verbose posts utilizing the Microsoft Word thesaurus at every available opportunity, and using sappy literary devices and antiquated terminology as much as I can. That much I promise. Anyways, that's the last time I'll address this situation in this thread.

With regards,

Akademix Esq.

So a mod actually put you on "probationary status" just because you wrote in, admittedly hard to read language, and then she/he proceeded to call you an "assclown". That's pretty ridiculous... Is there any way to impeach a mod?

EDIT:

And for the record, no, I did not PM anybody or conduct any sort of troll activity. Thanks for looking into the post history too--Im still waiting on the moderator's response as he said I was using language to be a troll...However, having posted here for two years, in that exact same way, I asked him why it took that long to address this issue. Anyways, cheers to you all, and thanks for the support.

Now, it was a lot easier to understand this post. Thanks!

Exactly what I was wondering. Who's the top boss around these forums?

Not likely. You might be able to get an entry-level, grunt work type job, but that's about it.

This is not correct.

You do NOT need an economics degree, or a business degree, or anything like that to enter the business/consulting world. You need a track record of hard work (because these guys WILL work you hard, 90+ hours/week). A high grade point in any field (although an analytical field like a natural science probably helps) can get you an internship where they will teach you the skills you need on the job. If you do well as an intern, they will take you on as analyst that makes low six figures. If you continue to work hard you can work your way up from there.

This is not my job of choice, but I have a friend who decided medical school wasn't for him and graduated with a biology degree and now works on wall street. There is always a job for people who are smart and work hard.
