Hi everyone, I am currently a high school senior and am planning to pursue medicine. For pre-med, I am unsure to major in either bio-medical engineering or applied mathematics. I like both, but I know I will head into medicine no matter what so it's really down to what would be the most beneficial.

I'm concerned that one major may be harder in comparison to the other, or that I may learn better from one major compared to the other. Any insight into course load, benefits, GPA, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I studied biomedical engineering and felt it was a pretty good choice but a difficult major. One thing to heavily consider is that your gpa will be very important and it could be beneficial to take an easier route. Bioengineering had all of the prerequisites for medical school in the required courses for the major, which was helpful, and I felt that admissions committees looked favorably on my degree. With that said, choose what makes you happy.

I am also a BME, and the math department at my school is quite terrible to say the least. Although I did well in most of my math classes, it was difficult for me. As RunGently said, BME had all the prereqs for med school (something you would have to fit in if you went the applied math route). Imo i think BME is more suitable and a better choice for med school because u can use that engineering background later on to create new devices or products.

Keep in mind you're still in high school, things change. You will change. Keep your options open and join student orgs to get a good feel of what you want. If you don't know what you want then try to at least figure out what you don't want. Good luck!

Bio-med engineering with have some overlap with medicine pre-reqs and might even open doors if you do become a doctor down the road. Applied mathematics will serve you little if at all in your pursue of medicine. Plus, a harder program looks good, ADCOMs know when you're taking an easier route (not sure if applied mathematics falls under that though 😛)
