ok so i keep seeing everyone talk and talk and talk about how random/unexpected the DAT bio is on the real test. Well I was wondering if its like straight memorization questinos that are asked or do they really dive into conceptual???

i've done dat destroyer bio, cliffs times 2, and kaplan bio. plus i do kaplan bio subject tests.

i just don't know if i should memorize or if they like set up scenarios and you need to apply?

i'd appreciate any help guys!!!

thank you!

Bio on the dat is a real crapshoot. Sometimes it's worded funky, and sometimes you have no idea what they are asking for. My advice to you is, spend time with bio but spend more time with ochem/gchem as those are more straightforward/less broad.

Think about it.

If you score: Bio: 19, Gchem: 27, Ochem: 26, RC: 20, QR: 20= AA= 22-23, with a TS of 25ish?

It's all about odds, and the odds are best if you hit the Gchem/Ochem section hard.

First, I'm going to say...that I am not one of these 100% Bio 30, guys.
I did very well in biology and I am a no excuse type of guy.
Just cover all the topics listed in the DAT guideline, the rest...is out of your control, so don't worry about it.

People that say it's SOOOOOO RANDOM, seriously? If you studied it, would you still think it's random? Probably not. Bio is so broad that you're not going to know everything. You don't need to know EVERYTHING to do well. You just need to know enough to reason through the answer choices with the correct one. I would just look at the feedback of people that do well and see what I can learn from their experience and be better prepared. Instead of adding more uncertainty to your "worried mind."

Bio does cover topics that you will have never studied unless you took some upper div classes. Like some techniques that are asked about are never covered in gen bio. Just study enough for this section to do well. Unlike ochem and gen chem, which can be mastered, bio is one section you should not count on in getting a perfect score.

I didn't think it was that random. maybe b/c I work in a research lab and the technique names were super easy for me. but even if I didn't, I think I'd know b/c you do learn those in upper-div bio class (i.e., cell bio lab or DNA recombinant technique class). But I think I only had 2 questions on techniques (reallllly basic) and most of them were human anatomy/physiology related.

On the actual DAT, are there a lot of bio questions in the format of....

Which are correct (or incorrect) statements:
I (statement 1)
II (statement 2)
III (statement 3)
IV (statement 4)

and they give you different combinations of choices for each answer A-E ??

it seems like there are a lot of those on Achiever, and I usually know like 2-3 of the statements as fact and end up guessing the rest...
