this is bio question 12.
as far as their products are concerned,
all biosynthetic reactions in living cells
result in
A. a more ordered state, therefore a
decrease in entropy.
B. a more ordered state, therefore an
increase in entropy.
C. energy released in the form of ATP.
D. energy made available for motion.
E. a more ordered state with no
entropy change.

the answer is a. can some one explain this???? I thought increase in entropy means increase in randomness....

Start eliminating the false answers!

A. a more ordered state, therefore a
decrease in entropy.

B. a more ordered state, therefore an
increase in entropy...(More order means decrease in entropy-->False)
C. energy released in the form of ATP...(Photosynthesis stores the energy of sunlight in chemical bonds of sugars. So, unlike glycolysis, it's not an energy releasing process-->False)
D. energy made available for motion...(If energy is not released in form of ATP, it can't be made available for motion, since muscle contraction requires ATP-->False)
E. a more ordered state with no
entropy change...(Order means decrease in Entropy. So, there is in fact some change in entropy-->False)

the answer is a. can some one explain this???? I thought increase in entropy means increase in randomness....

Hope this helps!

There is a usually a key word, here it is bioSYNTHETIC, meaning SYNTHESIS, meaning anabolism. An example would be photosynthesis. Photosynthesis builds a more ordered product, glucose, from CO2 and H2O. Therefore, there is decrease in entropy because a more ordered product is less random.

I am positive you know this but the "all reactions" threw you off, because it is meant to. Just look for key words in the question.
