What does the cell first release when infected by a virus?

If the virus is going through a lysogenic cycle, nothing is released and instead the virus will be dormant and noninfectious.

But if the virus (bacteriophage) is going through a lytic cycle, it will attach itself the host cell, release its DNA, replicate a whole bunch, package together the virus heads, dna and tails, and then release viral progeny that will go on to infect other cells that contain the receptor for them. In the process of exiting the cell, the host cell dies.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I already knew about the lytic and lysogenic cycles and had a feeling that this question wasn't asking about that. Interferon seems like the right answer. Thanks again.
