Biochem class

I see that a lot of school require you to take a bio chem class before applying...

I was just wondering how strict schools are with their requirements i am guessing they are pretty strict.
Also to those who have taken bio chem did you take organic 2 before taking it. The reason I ask this is because at my school is requires me to take organic 1 and 2 before taking bio chem but i am sure i could find a way to get around taking 2 and just taking bio chem and then i can get out of taking orgo 2.

I would highly suggest contacting the Admission office of all the respected institution you are applying to. Just so that everything is clearer.

In subject of Biochem, I took mine after finishing my Organic Chem II (Since I don't want to chance things).

You should factor in that this also all depends on what school you are currently attending. I used to think the same way but if you're attending Maryland - sorry, but tough luck. They don't budge on requiring you to take organic chemistry 2 first before biochemistry.

There's an online biochem class offered by NECO - its a bit expensive (actually really expensive and not accepted by some schools), but it's an opportunity to bypass organic II. The class seems pretty involved - you need a webcam, microphone, and plenty of patience to deal with everything online. However, if you're in a time crunch, like I am, it's the best possible option. I suggest making sure you know exactly which school you'll be attending and whether that institution accepts the class before you get off track at your regular university. Good luck!

I took Orgo 2 at the same time as Biochem. While some schools may not require it, I would highly recommend taking Biochem. It helps to synthesize what you learned in Organic Chem (mostly the first semester) and a lot of the molecular biology that you've learned. I don't know how useful Orgo 2 was on the OAT or future classes, though.

OChem 2 was really useful for the OAT for me. I took OChem 1 and 2 my sophomore year and then BioChem my junior year. It wasn't required to take both, but I did because I felt it would make me a stronger candidate. I'd recommend it because BioChem has helped in a lot of other classes as well. Just a thought.

My university's Biology department gave me a waver on orgo 2 to get into Biochem. It was a pretty tough senior-level course, but more heavy on molecular/cell biology than anything with orgo. Really glad I didn't have to bother with orgo 2.
I suggest you talk with the biochem professor, and let him know your situation. I told mine that I got an "A" in orgo 1, and didn't need orgo 2 for my prereq's. He signed off without any issue.

I would strongly recommend taking orgo 2 for two reasons:
-it makes biochem a bit easier
-it is covered on the OAT and orgo 1 will not be enough for you to understand the questions without teaching yourself anyway
