Hi everyone 🙂

I'm going to be applying for the 2014 cycle and I have a question that has been bothering me all day.

I took biochemistry at my school in Fall 2012, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, I was not able to do my best in the class and I ended up with a C- 🙁

I know that is terrible but other than that I have an okay GPA ( 3.68 ). I'll also be taking my DAT in a couple of weeks( fingers crossed 🙂)

I wanted to retake biochem but my school only offers it in the fall and I just graduated this month. I cant take it over the summer because I live far from my college and it is really expensive for me 🙁

I was wondering if it would be okay to put biochemistry in the "upcoming coursework" section when I apply and if I get into a school that required biochemistry, then I could take an online version of the class ( such as Online Distance Medical Biochemistry
University of New England ). The reason I am looking into the online alternative is because I work full time.

I hope all this make sense, what do you guys think? Will this C- in biochemistry keep me out of dental school? I'm really starting to freak out. If it helps I've taken other upper division biology classes and I've gotten A/A- in them. For example, Microbiology, Mammalian Physiology, and Cancer Biology.

Thank you everyone for your help and have a great day 🙂

one C- shouldn't matter with 3.65, in my opinion.
I would maybe ask the schools if it is necessary to retake the class.

some schools that list biochem as one of their pre-req courses say "minimum of ____ grade is required for these pre-req courses"

you should check on each schools website
the minimum grade was C or C- for the ones I've seen

okay, thank you everyone for the help 🙂

Most of the time a C- does not satisfy as passing for any prereq and usually needs to be retaking.

However, having said that, it is very individual by school. If you do get into a school that requires biochem, you will have to see if they will accept your C- or whether you can take it online. Nobody here can tell you that, you will just have to wait and see how the cards fall.

Your biggest problem is that your grade may be construed as being unable to handle upper level courses and no online course is going to shake off that feeling.

Nah getting a C- won't keep you from dental school. I actually got a C- in Biochemistry too and had to retake it. Most dental schools I interviewed at didn't seem to mind. Just be ready to explain yourself if they ask about it.

Okay, yea, everything you guys say makes sense. About not being able to handle upper division classes, well I've taken other upper division biology classes such as Microbiology, Cancer biology, and Mammalian physiology etc and I've gotten A/A-s in all of them so I'm hoping they'll see this biochemistry grade as the exception and not the norm. I am totally prepared to take biochem again if I get into a school that needs biochem. Thanks everyone for the help!
