Hi everyone, I have a question and I hope somebody can help me 😱 I have a Biology bachelor's degree already and I'm applying to dental school either this year. I was thinking about going to school for a dental assistant certification while I wait to either get accepted or to start dental school but I don't know what to do. I'm NOT currently working as a biologist and I'm not sure if working as a Biologist while I wait will look better on my application or if going to school for the dental ass. cert would look better. So that's basically my question 😳 ... Would it be better for me and my application to work as a full time biologist while I wait or just go with the dental assistant cert and keep my part time job that I have now until I start school?

Help pleasee!! 😕

In my opinion, either should be find. Do what you think you'd find most enjoyable.

I wouldnt call someone with only a BS in biology a biologist. But if you mean doing research, its highly regarded. Dental assisting, which will give you lots of exposure to the profession is also highly regarded.

Either one of the two looks good.

Personally, I would go with something in Biology.

You would be doing the dental work until the day you retire.

Do something different while you have time.

But don't go by me.

Do whatever you like out of the two. Or something else.

I don't think the Committee would cringe at anything you do unless you put "stripping" as your main source of income and experience for the past 2 years or something.

During the interview process, I was given high fives by the admission officers due to my extensive research experience and the fact that I published. One of the reasons I was admitted at SC was because of this fact. I will do research if I were you

Do what you feel you would enjoy most. That said, being a dental assistant will give you tremendous exposure to dentistry. You will learn a ton and have a leg up on other first year students. You will have used many of the instruments, worked on indirect vision and other things that may throw you off those first few years in school. You will be able to put everything in context during years 1 and 2 and have an understanding of "real world" dentistry. You will see how different dentists work and be able to build your patient skills. In addition, haven worked in general dentistry you will have a better idea if you want to specialize or not. Finally, every dentist I speak with whether it be a general or specialist says assistant will help a ton.

In the end it is your experience so do what you love whether it be assisting or research.

Oh, and the pay is damn good probably more than you would make as a researcher

Hi,

It all depends on how much money you want to invest in about 8 months of dental assistant education. That's how long it takes here in FL 👎

Do you know a Dentist that can train you? Here in FL is about $8 to $10/hr 😱 Colorado is about $20/hr I heard 🙄

I have a friend that trained his own sister, and she makes close to $20/hr without lic.

Research is great also, is just that it won't give you the opportunity to work in the dental field. You will be ahead of many people once you enter dental school.

Choose one that will make you >happy< 😍 They are both good. It's enough of doing stuff to *impress* the adcoms! LOL!!!!!

Good luck :luck:
