OK..I just wrote my dats on nov 6th. Granted I havn't received my scores yet but I think I can give solid advice to all those who are worried about the biology section of the dat.
Kaplan is NOT enough-it's very important to start early and use 1 or 2 other sources such as Campbells or Schaums. Also, I believe this is the hardest section to study for because the scope of questions they can throw at you is extremely broad. My advice would be to read every fact and concept as if you were sure it would eventually appear on the test. Don't skip over anything because you feel it would never show up on your dat. Also don't ignore plants, ecology and evolution in place of respiration, cellular structure and other more maintstream topics. I got questions distinguishing phylum nematoda from platyhylmethis (flatworms)..also a question on nekton and one on PKU. Also be sure to know your genetics i.e mother who is a carrier for colorblindness has a son with a normal father...and drosophila with crooked short wings mates with an unknown phenotype and produces a long crooked wing progeny..what is the genotype of the other parent type stuff..
There was also a chem question on viscosity and one on submitting h20 to electrolysis..funky stuff
It realllllly helps to have solid background in biology. I specialized in it for my BSc so I basically finished the 40 questions in just over 10 minutes. So start to study early and be sure to omit as little as possible. Also know the products of glycolysis, krebs, calvin cycle and light cycle very well..as well as the product intermediates. Got 3 questions on that stuff..
