I am a non-traditional student trying to finish up a few classes this year in hopes of getting into a school in the next two years. I have a BS but need to get a few more science classes before I can apply. My question is I took BIO 101-103 about six years ago and I'm curious if that will count as my one year of Gen Bio. It is listed as General Biology on my transcript but need to know if it has to be a 200 level course for it to count. Since most 100 level classes are "not for science majors" I'm trying to figure out if I need to go back and take the series again at the 200 level. Thanks much for any help.

Well, considering you don't need physics for science majors, I can't see it should be a problem. But you should perhaps check with your individual prospective schools to make sure that prereqs don't expire (I hear some places they do!) 😳

At my school we have both bios, but we are advised that the bio for non-science majors is NOT the bio we need to take for med school pre-reqs so def. double chek with your school or the schools you'd like to apply to. Good Luck!

If this course is a three-quarter General Biology course with lab for Science majors, then you should be OK. If not then you will need to take a full year of General Biology (university-level) for Science majors. The course description is key in deciding what to do at this point. If there was a General Biology with a higher number at your school, then your 100-level course may not be satisfactory. If not, this course may be OK. If this course satisfied the pre-req for Organic Chemistry, then you are probably OK.

The fact that you took this course six years ago may be an issue to some medical schools so investigate this matter in addition to the above.

Get a copy of the MCAT topics (available for download at the MCAT website) and make sure that your General Biology course covered all of these topics. Again, if this was not the case, you may need a retake. A MCAT review course or review book will not substitute for a bio course that didn't cover all of the topics that you need for this exam.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies it is very helpful. I was really hoping to not have to take Gen Bio over again but if nothing else it would be a good refresher. It has been so long I don't remember much of it, although I would rather just go through a review book then pay for more classes. I think I will contact a few schools and see what they have to say. Thanks again everyone.
