Hey All,

My school doesn't offer a "general biology" course that one can take during freshman year and offered other biology courses such as Genetics...so I wanted to know if DO school accept upper-level biology classes such as Neurobiology, Immunology, etc towards their requirements.
I will call DO school that I am interested in, and ask about their policy, but I wanted to know your experiences with the requirement for biology when applying.

Thank you!

The bio requirement is pretty soft. Pretty much any biology will fulfill it, so yes if you have those courses they'll accept you.

That being said what exactly does your school do for a foundation course in biology? It's not exactly realistic to go straight into a course without understanding stuff like central dogma, cellular anatomy, or krebs.

@Drrrrrr. Celty
For biology major at my school, we go straight into an Evolution & Genetic course. The rationale behind this is so they can weed out biology major, and in my experience was rough since it is the first class you need to take as a freshman.

That is the reason why I am asking around is to see what everyone's experience has been like.

On the side note, yes we have Biology 101, but it is intended for non-major and does not count towards a major in biology, so I did not take.

ok, maybe you have not started your application, but what I did maybe useful to you.
In the new application system, you have to select your course work to match each school's requirement (it takes a bit time). For example, after you enter all your coursework to your application, if you want to apply to PCOM, you will have to select which courses you took fulfill PCOM's requirement. All you need to do is to select all the biology courses you took (maybe only the ones you got good grades) like microbio, immuno genetics etc. There is no limit on how many courses you can select.

@becomingdoctor You are correct, I will start the application process next year. Thank you so much for the informative reply! This is just what I was looking for.

So pretty much, you're okay with any 8 hours of Biology courses?

Most are pretty flexible but not all. Many say Biology, Biological Science, etc or even Zoology and will accept anything in that broad category. But some specify General Biological Sciences and then list what they will accept (e.g. Intro Bio, Biodiversity, Gen Bio, Cell Bio, etc). You can look up the requirements as each school is listed on the AACOMAS site, so find the schools you might be interested in.... maybe 20-30.It would suck to be eliminated from a school you'd like because of a course issue you could have avoided.

Best of Luck
