does this combination work for interviews?

Yes, if you have a 4.0 and 25AA.

The combination like that is more casual in my opinion.

Would people just buy a proper freaking suit. I mean, this is an investment in your future. Why don't people understand this?

if you're wearing khaki-colored pants (not the same as khakis; i'm talking slacks), you should go with a navy blazer.

but just buy a suit, and NOT a solid black suit.

If a black suit is all you have though, just don't wear a white shirt. Wear a coloured shirt (blue, lavendar, even pink) and a matching tie (one of a deeper, richer shade to your shirt) and the black suit works. Just keep in mind that when you're outdoors you might look a bit formal, as you really notice how dark a black suit is in sunlight.

If you insist on black, for whatever reason, go for a pinstripe.

Buy a simple suit and conservative dress shirt/tie and you are good to go. Don't over think it, don't overdress it, don't be "casual about it," and don't try to go for some skinny tie fashion statement. It's formal and everyone else will be to.

Absolutely not 👍 Just wear a suit. I bought my suit for about $100, Shoes $30, already had a tie, socks, belt and a shirt.

one of the dentists i know told me to always wear a white shirt to the interviws. hmmmm

Im laughing at how a black suit somehow became the new psycho SDN leading trend of things that will keep you out of dental school (but I suppose its better than the old one of a 22AA or something)

With that said, a black suit jacket and khaki pants would never be a good combination for any event

well i guess the suit is not completely black, but rather its pinstripe
the suit has the same pinstripe pants, but since i've gained a few pounds over the past years i cant wear them comfortably. and i'd hate to wear non-matching black pant with the suit. what to do!

1. lose weight

or

2. fork out another $85-$100 bucks and go get a matching suit when Jos. A Bank has one of their buy 1 get 19 free sales
3. dont dress like a mismatched homeless person
4. get into dental school
5. disregard females, acquire currency
6. ????
7. profit

A nacy blazer and khaki slacks is probably too casual. Save it for the country club.

Can you have the pants let out? If it's just the waist, you might have enough material in there to get it to a wearable state.

got another suit this afternoon, thanks guys!
probably gonna make some alterations to the first pants too so now i have two suits

It's not that it'll keep you out; it's just annoying because so many people go in with black suits. And on top of that traditional suit fashion says black suits are for funerals and evening formalities just short of a tux. Interview style would be a solid (such as navy or charcoal).

my plan only has 4 steps and the last two are the same

I have a black suit, white shirt, and purple necktie. Is this not good to wear for an interview?

Most people will be wearing black suits at the interviews. You will be fine!

Someone with some fashion sense and proper etiquette.

People, LISTEN to this guy!

I totally agree. I hear if you go gray you will stand out, since very few people can pull this color suit off well. Worth looking into maybe?!

you don't want to blend in with the rest of the applicants

Wrong! DS's have interviews to screen out applicants that do not fit in. A DS interview is not the time to wear something that makes you stand out from typical applicants. You can do that after you have been admitted. You want be to considered for admission based on your GPA, DAT, and your interview, not what you were wearing at the interview.

I agree to a point, the clothes do not make the man at these interviews. At the same time, you don't want to stand out in a bad way. Standing out in a good way probably can't hurt you.

The inner gay man in meself thinks it's too preppy. *snaps finger in Z formation*

Dun do disss for interview. Nuh uh~~

Preppy? Yes. Formal enough for an interview? No.

^Fer realz.

While you're at it, why not wear a polo and pop your collar? Don't forget to grease your hair into spikes and wear aviators + lipgloss. Jebus just go with the traditional suit. Make sure you're clean shaven and wear a nicely ironed shirt and a nice tie. That is all you need. Shine with your aura, not with fashion faux pas.

that's quite a cynical viewpoint of the interview process. I would hope most of the "screening" happens before the interview.

Obviously you don't want to be the guy wearing an orange zoot suit, but you also don't want to be yet another guy wearing a white shirt, black suit and non-descript tie. If you wear something conservative, yet different (e.g. charcoal, navy, grey or even brown), you might be more memorable to the adcoms. They may not remember your name, but if they can remember you as "the guy who wore the grey suit with the pink shirt" or something like that, then you've got an edge, IMO.

I greased up my hair with gel and spiked it. I got in with style 🙂

This.

It's like wearing a black belt with brown shoes.

I don't know what prep school you went to, but that outfit is outrageous. Preps are rich enough to buy matching coats and slacks...not two different colors from either side of the clearance rack.

Its the mismatch that adds to the prep.
