So I was looking at the for sale site and saw this:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=1746928

Seems like checking e-mail, IMing, full web could come really in handy, especially since we all get the internet for free in school/university housing and we're not paying for an ISP.

From what I have read, the blackberry is the best tool to stay connected.

Anyone have any experience with them?

This may just be the new toy I have to get!! 😀

My husband has one for work and loves it. Its small and allows him to constantly keep updated on his email while he travels. It is a GSM phone which is great because he travels alot internationally, although he usually doesn't use it as his primary phone. He keeps his schedule, address book and of course uses it for email.

Depends what your needs are, but it is a nice little device. Remember that some med schools require 3rd and 4th yrs to purchase PDAs and can sometimes be quite specific about which models and software you must have.

Any thoughts about www.overstock.com should it ever appear as a sale item???

I know that electronics on this site are refurbished.

My gf's father was management in the design department on the blackberry.

I've seen pretty much all the models and some of the newer prototypes.

Try to find someone who has one and come to your own conclusions.

Take care.

I really like the design of the blackberry but is it really practical for a medical student or even an undergrad like myself. I'm trying to find reasons to get one but they don't seem to justify the $30/month extra to add it to my plan.

I prefer my sidekick to the blackberry, plus the sidekick just got a new design which is suposed to be smaller and lighter with some extra features.

I heard that although the sidekick has better "web" the Blackberry can go for over a week (something like 10 days) on one charge. That's AWESOME. Also I feel like the Blackberry is "more professional" and e-mail is what I care about, not the fun side of the sidekick.

However, after reading your post I read up on the sidekick, from Ashton, to Usher, to Lohan, they seem to be the hottest teen-lust toy. now is that a reason to have one or a reason not to have one.......?

Unless you have sprint, the e-mail is slow and the net stinks. However it is palm based.

So again I ask, why?

If you ahve the sprint phone, its faster as you said. Great machine email and net wise. A Palm Tungsten C is awesome with the wi-fi if its available in your hospital but that always isn't hte case. i wanted a phone, pda, and to access email which it does fine and text messaging. The net isn't the best but if you are planning it use it, chances are you are really trying to pass time which at that moment may be quite long anyways. If you are just checking email which I do alot, its perfect. Web sites catered to phones work really well anyhow even though I tend to read CNN frequently which is a big download for a phone like that. 👍

Blackberry is great but I love the treo becaues of the palm based programs I run. 5 minute clinical consult will take you far as well as multiple reference programs if not epocrates.

I never realized it was suposed to be the hot new toy for teens. I only got one because many of my friends had them and I liked them alot because they were easy to use. The sidekick does email... I used it for my med school stuff since that way I could recieve information from the schools immediately.
