OK this may sound strange but there's this guy in my class that cheated in Physics and he got an A in the class while my friend got a B so it really threw him over the edge and he really hates that guy so now my friend wants to put him on the "blacklist" at pharmacy schools. He is applying this year to the schools in Cali and now he wants to email all the schools in Cali and tell them that this guy cheated in his classes and even pretend to be the professor to keep him out of pharmacy school.
Question, is this effective or do the adcomm not care/do anything about it?

Where's eelo? Maybe he can answer this one.

vindictive huh ? Seems immature to pursue such an action ! Without outside help, I'm sure that person's dishonesty will reach up to him. Your friend should wisely use his time.

haha eelo...rings a bell. thats the guy that got pissed off at cheaters in his class right? i have to look at his post again.

No, that wasn't me. I commented in that thread, but I wasn't one of the ones who was all full of righteous indignation. ;-)

I'd be suspiscious of anyone who was NOT faculty sending me hate mail about an applicant. For it to have credibility, it would need a name, because sending something like that anonymously would just look fishy to me. I agree that it sounds really vindictive. I'd also probably contact the professor at te scool and speak to him/her personally about it.

If your 'friend' wants to pretend s/he's a professor, that's a whole 'nother ball of academic dishonesty wax. Your 'friend' is then no better than the person who cheated. I believe in karma, and anyone who would be deceitful in this manner is likely to get hit with something equally bad, or possibly worse. There's always the possibility that your 'friend' will be found out, and passing himself off as a professor is fraudulent, and will eliminate any possibility of ever getting into any graduate or professional program.

I strongly, strongly recommend that your 'friend' not do this. If your 'friend feels that strongly about the cheating, then your 'friend' needs to notify someone within the school, and not take it outside. Schools don't like it when their dirty laundry is aired in public.

It sounds like your 'friend' has a God complex. What power does s/he think s/e has to put someone on a "blacklist" at all parmacy schools in the state? Does your 'friend' really think s/he is that important?

It is your friend's word against the cheater's, and your friend has no proof to present. They are at risk of looking like a vengeful liar and may hurt their own chance of admission.

Plus, as eelo said, pretending to be a professor is quite a dishonest act in itself.

Your friend should have told the professor when it happened. I think that emailing every school and telling them would be quite immature.

Your friend needs to get over it and move on for god's sake. I mean, it doesn't matter what grade other people got no matter how they got it. Exposing the guy won't bring his grade up so what's the point? I think your friend is just jealous of his grade and is mad at himself for not getting a better grade. But hey, ya gotta give the guy credit for cheating and not getting caught right? lol

what goes around comes around...thats my motto..I dont thinks its a friend..I think its you cystapharm...i think pretending to be a professor and sending emails to people schools is a sign of some sort of mental illness......

Whether he did the email or not is beyond me because he was my lab partner but we don't talk anymore and even if I brought it up I don't think he would give me an honest answer. The fact that he thought abotu ever doing this startled me because I never knew people will go through such measures for avenge and that in itself is vindictive so it raised my thoguht as to weather its an effective measure on his part to get the school to not consider this guy.
Besides, do professors even do these things? wouldn't that be vindictive on the professors part? Now thats something to think about....there was a recent post about someone cheating in anatomy and getting an F..do you guys think if the professor emailed the school then the cheater will be done with his academic career for good? So professors have that much power over their students then.. if they don't like a student they have the power to destroy them without them ever knowing?

whatever ...why don't you go ahead and put quotes around "friend" like eelo did becaseu he seems to think im the "freind".

If a professor wants to express a negative opinion, they'll write a bad LOR. They can't do anything else. Besides, how would a professor know where someone's applying anyway unless the student tells them?

Eelo's probably using quotes to say that this person isn't really your friend. The friend is really just an acquaintance.

freidn or not....i don't know whats he is. there really arn't many ways of expressing 'close acquaintence' or whatnot.

but this is the same guy that told me to use a steam iron to open up LORs so he's got alot of ulterior motives on his mind.

I just think this is an unusual posting and I think it may be you....is your friend a pharmacy major...You never said if your friend is a pharmacy major. .. if he isnt why would your friend get worked up over the matter.. Your obviously a pharmacy major...you might be in competition with this guy in trying to get into the same pharm school..i dont know...this is an all around bad story...really really sad...

The steaming of LOR envelopes reminded me of something..... Is it okay to open a LOR that I don't need anymore? I had the same professor write an LOR for Pharmcas and also needed a paper copy to be mailed to UIC. Upon my acceptance to MWU-CCP I decided to not bother sending in the supplemental and LORs to UIC.....but I still have the envelope in my glove box. I am assuming the LOR is the same as what was received by Pharmcas (maybe a cut n' paste job) and I am also assuming it must have been a good letter since I was accepted. I am a little curious to what he wrote about me. Should I open it....mail it back to him....or burn it....I don't know.

Mail it back. You'll establish trust with that professor and maybe get a little more respect.

Thats a tough one! I would be tempted to read it, but I would feel guilty if I did. I wouldn't know what to do.

That would seem awkward because to me it would seem like saying that you didn't want to use his letter or something or that sort. If you do go that route, I'd send a letter with it saying something along the lines of "thank you for the letter, but I didn't need it because I got accepted into my first choice."

well obviously he's a pahrmacy major coudn't you tell from the context that I am talking about pharmacy school.

I would say save it as a soulvenir. then after you graduated pharamcy school open it and frame it. better yet, let your grandkids read it. tell them this was how my professsors perceived me and this is what got me where I am now!

i would never burn it!!!! why would you burn something that means so much! woudn't something in your mind tell you it's not right that I am ligthing something like this on fire?

I already e-mailed him a thank you the day after receiving my acceptance letter to let him know the good news. I told him which school I was accepted to. So if I return it to him I think he would understand why.

I wasn't really serious about the whole burning thing.

thanks labrat you just hijacked my thread.

Duh. Do I have to explain everything?
The point of mailing it back is to show the professor that he didn't open the letter even though he could have without the professor knowing about it.

This is just like those safer needles. If you check out their website, which I posted a link to, you can only use them once. They even have illustrations that will show you how the needle goes into the tube once you pull back the plunger.

Sorry about that. You reminded me that I have that letter in my car still....I almost forgot. I didn't want to start a new thread for this.

This problem reminds me of a saying that we say at the nightclub I work at, "Karma is a b_____, and she always comes back around."

Its a great gesture, but I was just saying that personally I wouldn't mail it back unless I sent something with it because I would feel rude for having them take the time to write one and then not using it.

About the needles, I looked at the website and I said that I couldn't tell if the needle could have came back out. Sorry if I can't see a tiny little object...

I'm not stupid.

At my previous university, academic dishonesty was recorded directly on the transcript. I believe this is the case at most institutions (that it is codified formally).

I thinks adcoms are smart enough to figure out someone e-mailing/calling them about a particular student is bluffing. Besides, how many professors, aside from those that write LOR's, know which schools you are applying to?

That guy is ******ed.

There are only so many schools in CA. its not hard to email all of them if they really wanted to.

But I think most adcoms know that most professors wouldn't even bother doing that...they're too busy being professors to have any type of "vendetta" against a student.

No chance this will fly, IMO.

if they really hate the studentn they can.
speaking of hate...i have a family member that teaches at a university and she realyl hates one of her students. they got into an argument over her exam and how she was gettting an F she said didn't diserve (she clearly diserved it but she was just disrespectful of my family member becasue my family member does not speak english well and such..but its math so whatver right.. Anyway that very same day this girl went on RateMyProfesor and gave her a really bad rating..and really harsh. I thought they would take it down but I guess they didn't. she really really hates this girl (they had issues the whole semester and even brought in the dean) but shes mature and didn't mind it much becasue it was one bad rating so big deal right...so shell never do such a thing but she has the power to I bet if she wanted to.

I didn't say you were stupid!

It's just a chore to go back to something and explain it or reexplain it.
My mind moves much faster than my fingers or my mouth. It's hard to keep up!

Believe it or not, it takes me a while to post. I think about the topic, then I look at my post. I go back and forth over and over again until I hit the submit button.
That's all...

The thing with Rate my professor is that it can go both ways...professors post fake good reviews all the time, and given the volume of reviews a professor may have, one bad one will look like a fluke if there are 5 good ones surrounding it.

Back to the topic, even if an adcom entertains the idea that an email from cyberspace has some credence to it, they'll verify with that professor (at least) via phone or e-mail. If they're extra smart, they'll look for spoofed emails and email the professor directly via available directory at their university.

this is the most ridiculous thread I've ever seen on SDN. why are you wasting time on this incredulous topic people?
