Will someone please tell me the differences between these two?? i.e. the fate of the cells of each. I know they are not synonymous but have had trouble getting a clear explanation. Someone please help I have the DAT in a couple days!! 🙂

I know the blastula is a hollow ball of cells formed after the morula, and before the 2 and 3 layered gastrula, but I'm not sure about the blastocyst.

blastocyst - i think it comes after the blastula has been been developed so around day 5-6. the inner layer is the embryocyst which contains the embryo and then the outer layer is the trophoblast (made up of 2 cell layers) and it provides the nutrients for the embryo and it later attaches to the endometrium for placenta development.

Harrygt im pretty sure they are not the same thing. Ive read that the blastocyst follows the blastula, so in some way they are different

blastula is a hollow sphere of cells in animal embryonic development. the blastocyst is similar, but has the inner cell mass that gives rise to the fetus itself, whereas the outer layer gives rise to the placenta.
I think the main difference is that the blastula has a single layer of cells all around whereas the blastocyst has the inner cell mass which is several layers thick.

Yea I think its almost the same thing.
Blastula is a stage right before gastrulation begin. The stage where you already have the different kinds of cells needed for gastrulation and it forms vegetal and animal pole. So I think the top part (animal pole) where there are no cells is just full of liquid and i think it could be called blastocyst or blastocoel. Correct me if I am wrong but I think blastocyst is part of blastula stage.

I see, well i guess the problem is that they are so similar that some texts just say they are equivalent. If you wiki it, they dont explain a difference b/w the two but list the blastocyst coming after the blastula. Lemoncurry may have shown the differences, assuming they are different.
I dont think its too big of a deal, I just wanted to make sure. Im guessing we wont see a question like "What is the primary difference b/w the blastula and blastocyst?"

I definitely don't think that knowing blastocyst vs blastula will be impt for the test...but some of the stuff said I THINK might need to be tweaked a little.
I think the blastula actually gets implanted in the uterus around 8 days not 5-6 (probably not important) and I THOUGHT (correct me if I'm wrong lemoncurry) that the placenta originates not from the fetus, but from the endometrium of the mother's uterus.
