When a patient submits blood and urine for testing (let's say, a liver panel) the patient is only told the samples are being sent to a lab.
Now, a basic liver panel is much too basic for a pathologist to look at. I would say it most likely it is processed quickly and cheaply by a machine which is specialized for this task.
But this machine and the lab would be part of the pathology department of a hospital, right? All blood and tissue samples, even if they're routine such as a blood liver panel, would be the domain of pathologists? Just that such tasks as running samples for a liver panel would be done by technicians and not MD-pathologists.
Please correct me if I'm mistaken.
